Vice President's Message

I welcomed everyone to the meeting including our speaker tonight, Linda Holland. I then reported that I had had a busy week again with family which isn’t always a good thing but was glad to be back in Warrnambool.

Apologies for the meeting from Kelly Curran, Ann Body, Svet Lineham, Rachel Furnell, Leon De Villiers, Brooke Jensen and Trevor Williams. We hope Kelly is on the mend and she has had her ladder removed from temptation.

Presidents’ announcements
1. Our District was allocated four (4) Rotary Community Groups. We will be part of Southwest Rotary Community Group (to be confirmed) which includes Camperdown, Cobden, Colac, Colac West, Hamilton, Port Fairy, Portland, Portland Bay, Terang, Warrnambool, Warrnambool Central, Warrnambool Daybreak, Warrnambool East.
2. After the Rotary Community Groups have been formally advised by RISPPO, Establishment Meetings will be held before nominations are called for Rotary Community Leaders (RCL).  Establishment Meetings are expected to occur between 17 February and 15 March. At least two from each Club should attend the Establishment Meetings.  It is recommended the current President and President-Elect attend.  Where possible, they would also encourage the Secretary to attend. It will be a zoom meeting so I’m sure if we wanted more that would be ok. Let me (Janet) know if you’re interested.
3. The District Nominating Committee has decided to extend the closing date for applications
for the next DG to Wednesday 27 March 2024.
4. There is to be a “Say no to domestic violence” display at conference. Please see me if you are interested in being involved with this. Robbie had our guest speaker draw the ticket for swindle which was won by Glen again. He apparently obtained an impressive payout with only two cards left in the pack.

Member Announcements
- Chris Stebbing let members know that there is a survey to occur which involves counting bikes in greater Warrnambool and asked if any members were interested in participating. Chris advised it will be discussed at the Board meeting.
- John Beks reminded us of the meeting at Crossley on next Monday 19 th Feb. There is no meeting on the Tuesday evening. If anyone needs a ride contact Janet.
- Minigolf is on Thursday 15 th February, and I heard that Warrnambool were the winners with Alan Bowes getting a hole in one. Congratulations to our golfers. This will be on again next year and I think we need a cheer squad to go to.

Linda Holland spoke to us about suicide awareness highlighting that the numbers of people suiciding are unacceptably high. She spoke to us about the difference between empathy and sympathy. I realised that I am very good at sympathy, giving examples and practical solutions easily and not so good at empathy which involves really listening to what is being said and being there for the other person. I need a lot of practice at empathy, and I suppose it doesn’t just come naturally to most people but is a skill we can all improve on. Linda stressed the importance of checking in on friends
and fellow members and sometimes asking the at times difficult questions and being a listener. I, as someone who has a fair bit of stress in my life, have a “Mental Health Action Plan” for what I do when things get tough. I have it written down so don’t have to think it up when under stress and it goes through steps, I should take to ensure I can get through the days ahead. It has things like eating 3 meals a day, going to bed in time, turning off my phone at night, going for a daily walk, staying away from situations that irritate me (Bunnings) and more. At times members and in particular older members who as a generation are not so used to talking about feelings, experience really hard situations and feel like they do so alone. Whilst we do not want to intrude on people’s personal lives we can as co members be respectful and caring to each other as well as empathetic.

We never really know what someone has experienced and what (at times thoughtless) words may trigger so we need to be gentle with ourselves and others. Here are some hints on being mentally healthy.

Don’t forget Monday night at Crossley and have a good week.
President Janet Blackley

Port Fairy Folk Festival Volunteers needed
There has been great support from Members however we still need three (3)  volunteers to fill six vacant shifts .
The vacant shifts are across the 3 days (Friday evening/Saturday afternoon & evening/Sunday evening)
Undertaking 2 shifts entitles the volunteer to a weekend festival pass valued at $365.
The crowd management task is not onerous and essentially involves providing directions within the Tent.
If you have family members, friends or work colleagues who may be interested have them contact David on 0438647536 or dljb3280@gmail.com .

“SENILE VIRUS”
Just got this in from a reliable source: it seems there is a virus called the “Senile
Virus”, that even the most advanced programs of Norton and McAfee cannot take
care of it…. So be warned!! The virus appears to affect those of us, who were born
before 1950!
SYMPTOMS OF THE SENILE VIRUS:
1) Causes you to send the same email twice
2) Causes you to send a blank email.
3) Causes you to send email to the wrong person.
4) Causes you to send email back to the person who sent it to you.
5) Causes you to forget to attach attachments.
6) Causes you to hit “SEND” before you’ve finished the email.
REMEMBER?????
I don’t remember if I sent this one out….
I don’t think I did …. or did you send it to me??
Funny I don’t remember being absent-minded….
GOD, GRANT ME THE SENILITY TO FORGET THE PEOPLE I NEVER LIKED
ANYWAY, THE GOOD FORTUNE TO RUN INTO THE ONES I DO, AND THE
EYESIGHT TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE.
Now that I am older (but refuse to grow up), here is what I have discovered:
1) I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it
2) My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran
3) I finally got my head together: now my body is falling apart.
4) Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded….
5) Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded….
6) All reports are in: life is now officially unfair.
7) If all is not lost, where is it?!
8) It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser!
9) Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded….
10) I wish the buck stopped here: I sure could use a few…
11) Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded….
12) It’s hard to make a come-back, when you haven’t been anywhere
13) The only time the world beats a path to your door is when you’re in the
14) bathroom. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would have
put them on my
knees.
15) When I am finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide
to play chess?!
16) Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded….
17) It’s not hard to meet expenses…. they’re everywhere!!!
18) The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
19) These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter….
I go somewhere to get something and
then wonder what I’m here after.
20) I AM UNABLE TO REMEMBER, IF I MAILED THIS TO YOU,
OR NOT!?
21) Funny, I don’t remember being …… absent??? – minded???
Now, I think you’re supposed to send this to 5 or 6, maybe 8 or was it 10?! Oh!
Buggar!!!! Just send it to a bunch of your friends, if you can remember who they are!
Then something is supposed to happen….I think.
Maybe, you get your memory back, or something!!!
I think……
Congratulations to golfers to competed in the recent Cobden mini golf competition.

Community Groups in need
If you have the time before the meeting tomorrow, stop in at a local supermarket and purchase toothpaste for the local CWA or rice for Warrnambool and District Food Share. We will collect them up and organise someone to deliver them. Please leave donations with the name badges.
Blister-pack Recycling Trial Program
The environment is a new area of focus for Rotary. The four Rotary Clubs of Warrnambool are working to implement a variety of environmental projects in our community. Accordingly, the four Rotary clubs (Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak, Rotary Club of Warrnambool, Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central and the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East) have begun a medical blister-pack recycling trial program across Warrnambool. The trial project has received support and funding from Warrnambool City Council through their Community Development Fund, meaning that pharmacies and businesses participating in the project will not incur any cost during the trial period.

Currently, most medical blister-packs in our region go into landfill. This project aims to divert this waste from landfill by collecting the blister-packs and forwarding them to Pharmacycle, a company in NSW which sorts and recycles the material.

The collection process is very easy. Community members can recycle their pharmaceutical
blister packs by dropping them into collection boxes in the following locations;
 Anchor Point Retirement Villiage, 55 Aberline Road.
 Archie Graham Community Centre, 118 Timor Street.
 Direct Chemist Outlet Target, Shop T11, 154 Koroit Street.
 Infinity Pharmacy Warrnambool, 143-149 Lava Street.
 Soulsby and Struth Pharmacy, 103 Liebig Street.
