Vice President's Message

President Janet had family commitments in Melbourne so couldn’t chair our meeting this week. Apart from President Janet apologies were Ann and Andrew Body, Margaret Ross, Cathy Bligh, Peter Smid, Glen Brotchie, Leon De Villiers, Rachel Furnell, Jim Hanrahan, Svet Lineham & Judy Ross.

Our guest speaker was Jackie Elliot, Library Programs and Partnerships Coordinator, from the Warrnambool Library.

• The Wangoom meeting Tuesday 2 May was a great night albeit our numbers were well down on what we had anticipated and advised the caterers would be there. The meal was fantastic and as usual we enjoyed Terry’s sweep draw.
• Tony, Anne, Rachel and Sharon all attended the RC Warrnambool Daybreak’s inter club breakfast on 3 May.

Anne spoke about our meeting next week at the City Memorial Bowls Club. Specific details are below.

Sick list: Cathy and Glen are recovering well but still have a long way to go. Jim and Janet both have Covid and Trevor Blackley may have but refuses to be tested (much to Janet’s frustration) and Margaret Stalker is recovering from a fractured wrist.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Jackie Elliot, Library Programs and Partnerships Coordinator, from the Warrnambool Library. Jackie spoke about the library programs, resources and the extremely impressive increase in memberships and borrowings.

Next week Our meeting next Tuesday will be at the City Memorial Bowls Club and has been organised by Brooke to celebrate the success of the National Youth Science Forum. The other Rotary clubs have been invited and the young people we sponsored will report back to us on their experience. Time is 6.00pm for a 6.15 start. Dinner will cost $30 and will be alternating beef and chicken, drinks will be at bar prices.
IMPORTANT: Please let Anne know if you cannot make it and if you are attending, if you are bringing guests and any dietary requirements by Friday morning at the latest. This is a significant program of our club and Brooke has put a lot of effort into organising this event. Please show your support by being there. Lastly, John & Judy are rostered for fellowship next week but, as they are away, it will be Tony and Alan. Keith will do the invocation.

Milk bottle tops and bread tags:
I have been delivering your donations of milk bottle tops to the City Council offices. They are no longer accepting them, as the Lids for Kids project in Warrnambool is not operating at present. Instead, Wil, our guest speaker from the WCC, suggested you put the washed tops back on the washed milk bottles and place them in your yellow recycling bin.  We will update you if the Lids for Kids project is restarted.

The bread tags have been going to Bakers Delight in the  Coles carpark at the rear of Target. Feel free to drop them in if you are in the area, however if you still want to bring them to Rotary, I'm happy to deliver them on your behalf. Judy.

Wisecrack of the week

A SENIOR’S VERSION OF FACEBOOK
For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why FACEBOOK exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook, while applying the same principles.
Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom.
I give them pictures of my family, my dog and my gardening, taking things apart in my garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.
I also listen to their conversations, give them “thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them.
And it works just like Facebook!
I already have 4 people following me: two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.
BOWEL SCREENING
In past years around April/May I have been promoting ROTARY BOWELSCAN, with the result that a number of our members have taken up this method of testing one’s risk of Bowel Cancer. Those who have partaken in previous years will have received a reminder for an annual follow-up. The only difference is that the procedure is now performed by ENTERIX ColoVantage Bowel Screening.

Those of you interested and not yet having received a notice, please use the website where you can order direct: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024

BOWEL CANCER affects about 1 in 20 people, but can be curable, if caught early. Tragically, it claims the lives of around 100 Australians every week! If you or one of your loved ones is aged 50 or over, you are at a higher risk of bowel cancer. The good news is that if found early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. So, if you are above the 50-year age bracket, you can avail yourself of the BOWELSCAN Project, available during the months of April and May.

Note the early unsavoury warning signs: Blood in or on the stool / A recent change in bowel habits / General stomach discomfort / Weight Loss / Unexplained tiredness etc. See your Doctor! For a number of years I have not hesitated to participate. The test is completed at home, it is non-invasive and required no food nor medication restrictions. Simply collect a brushing of the sample in the reply-paid envelope included with the kit. Testing is approved by pathologists, and a letter of results will be sent to your GP. And this applied to both males and females!

Personally, I cannot consider myself immune to cancer. My family gene is in no doubt responsible for FOUR consecutive male generations of this rotten disease!

Last year, once more, I received a notice, with a NEGATIVE result in response to my annual Scan. Goes to prove that NEGATIVE news can be good news! I therefore don’t hesitate to participate once more this year, looking forward to a similar result.

Price per Test Kit: $30.00, but only available from the Website: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024
