Co-hosted by UNICEF, the event will highlight recent milestones: In July, Nigeria marked one year without a case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus, and in August, the entire African continent celebrated one year without a case. Jeffrey Kluger, health and science editor at Time magazine, will serve as moderator, joining other health experts, including UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake and polio ambassadors.

Eleven years ago, Jim and Roberta Graham developed a personal connection to Afghanistan after their son Rick, who was stationed there with the Indiana National Guard, learned of an infant in a refugee camp who needed heart surgery. In a story that tugged at the heartstrings of Hoosiers and was recounted in The Rotarian (January 2011), the Grahams worked with Rotary clubs in District 6560 (Indiana) and others to bring the infant, Qudrat, to Indianapolis for surgery. It is with much regret that President Steve Giddens and our members receive news of the passing of Val Rauert, wife of PP Ron Rauert PHF for 62 years.
Val was a very active supporter of our club, especially of the Camp Quality cabin and with Ron a strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation. Val served on many charitable committees including School Chaplaincy and Orana Children's Homes.
A funeral service for Val will take place at Warrnambool Uniting Church this coming Thursday September 24 at 2 pm.
Our thoughts are with Ron and his family, Peter, Julie and Sue, partners and children at this time.
President Steve Giddens welcomed everyone, including visitor Leanne Dart, guest speaker Stephen Ryan and Youth Exchange Student Ryan Keogh.
He expressed sadness at the loss of Val Rauert and encouraged Rotarians to attend the funeral which will be held on Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Uniting Church.
Rotarian Gordon Curran introduced Major Karina Wood for induction as a member of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool
Major Karina Wood, with husband Major Peter, share the role of Corps Officer (Senior Pastors) of the Salvation Army in Warrnambool. Karina and Peter took up this position in January this year after serving 10 years with The Salvation Army in Darwin, NT. Karina has been a Salvation Army officer for 25 years and had roles in Church leadership, chaplaincy, administration, and Youth and Children’s ministry.
A life-long learner, Karina completed a counselling degree a few years ago and is currently studying for a Master in Ministry. She enjoys study as it stretches the mind, challenges her thinking, and resources her ministry.
Together, Karina and Peter, with their three children, have served in four states and territories from East to West and North to South of the country and have lived in 10 different houses in the past 24 years of married life. Only their youngest, Kirsten, is living with them here in Warrnambool. Two sons live in Canberra and Darwin.
Karina comes to Rotary with a desire to get to know, love, and serve the community of Warrnambool. She is very grateful for this opportunity and for the warm welcome she has received . Karina Wood will be a most worthy and contributing member of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, and will be classified as Minister of Religion - Salvation Army, and her mentor will be Ian Sharman.
Youth Exchange student, Ryan Keogh, who has just learned he will be going to Finland was put on the spot to tell everyone about his future trip to Finland. He has already made contact with host family and because they live on the border with Sweden, two languages are spoken in the area – Finish and Swedish. Ryan he is looking forward to his time in Finland and is confident he will pick up both languages. Congratulations Ryan!

First Club Fun Activity was held on Sunday morning when a group gathered at Pronto's to share coffee (or tea) and cake.
Second Club Fun Activity is planned for Sunday October 11, when lunch has been booked at Images. Numbers are needed by Saturday 10 October. The reason for choosing Prontos for the morning tea and Images for lunch is to support those businesses who supported us in donating to the Dinner Auction.

Mal Price advised that the organisers of this event have asked Rotary for around 6 volunteers to help take down barricades after the event at around 3:30 pm. The new style barricades should take less muscle and time to take down. Let Mal know if you can help.

End Polio Fundraiser Movie - 21 October
This is a joint Rotary project with all four Warrnambool clubs selling tickets to this movie fund raiser. The Gates Foundation will match every new dollar 2 for 1 that rotary commits to polio eradication, up to $35 million per year. Gardening Obligation
Rotarians are reminded that we have two gardening obligations from the last two Dinner Auctions which are yet to be fulflled, one for Anne Hunt, the other for Anne Adams. Anne Hunt would like to have some light gardening work done within the next couple of weeks. Around 5 volunteers are needed to do a little digging, some weeding and general gardening cleaning on a week day.

Anne Adams introduced guest speaker Stephen Ryan who is a Waterways Health Planner at Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority. He has over 15 years of experience working in natural resource management and aquatic research. Stephen spends the majority of his time leading a number of aquatic rehabilitation projects, such as the Merri Estuary Fish Habitat Hotspot and the Glenelg River Judas Carp Project. Stephen is based in South West Victoria at Warrnambool. He became a keen recreational fisher from a young age and this fostered his passion for the environment. Stephen's talk was on managing the Merri River system, particularly issues relating to ecological management of the Merri, including seasonal flows, mouth openings and fish ecology.
He spoke and showed films about managing the restoration of the Merri River, part of which the natural flow has been adjusted, resulting in the river bed being quite bare, with very little natural hiding areas for fish. Steve said his passion was “what is in the water”. He showed pictures of the types of fish already in the Merri, and the numbers were surprisingly more than what the audience had thought. He described how "fish hotels" were made from logs and how these were put into the rivers to help stop erosion and give fish shelter. Large rocks have also been placed in the river (with the help of the WCC) which help stop erosion and act as a fish shelter.
Woody weeds on sides of the rivers are a real issue and work is being done to remove these and replace with more appropriate plants. A lot of weeding is being done near the Woollen Mill and replanting will be carried out during the wetter months.
One unusual thing Steve mentioned was that there are no medium sized fish in the areas in which he has been working. The fish are either very large or very small which may be due to the larger dominant fish in this area keeping the middle sized fish away. This highlights the need for adding rocks and other items to the river as hiding places for fish of all sizes. Steve said his aim is to get more fish into the rivers.
Fishing licences help to fund grants to carry out what he and his fellow workers do.

RCW Warrnambool East is once again mounting the City of Warrnambool Art Show which is scheduled for 25-27 September, with the gala opening scheduled for Friday evening September 25. 70% of the funds raised will go towards supporting the local community. This year the primary local focus will be to assist Lifeline South West Vic, to install a call back phone system. The remaining 30% of the funds will go towards continuing work the club has been doing over the last few years in East Timor, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Tickets to the Gala Opening are now selling at $20 per person. Attendees are automatically in the draw, announced on the night, for 2 nights for two at a 4 star Melbourne hotel. Drinks and canapes served, accompanied by the Warrnambool City Jazz Band playing on stage background music. Several further afield artists will be exhibiting for the first time this year.
