Stories
Sergeant at Arms Andrea Sampson called the members to order and opened the meeting.  It has been a busy month with the Father of the Year Breakfast and the film night for Alternative to Schoolies Project. Also an interesting week for Andrea who dressed as Alice in Wonderland for a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Somehow a photo of her ended up on facebook with not a very flattering caption, and to date nobody is owning up. She would like to get her hands on the person who posted the image!

Acting President, Anne Adams opened the meeting and advised that President Steve was absent due to having to attend an emergency meeting. As the fire season warms up, this will be a busy time for Steve, and we might have to draw up a roster of Acting Presidents.

Anne welcomed everyone, including guests, Ken Radley, Youth Development Officer from the Warrnambool City Council, Declan Primmer, Youth Mayor, Tom O'Sullivan of the Warrnambool Youth Council, Ricardo Pimenta, Exchange Student from Brazil, Karina Wood, Andrew Hallett, Russell Lineham and Veronica Cuzens.

Ian Cairns and his team of helpers were congratulated on another successful Father of the Year award breakfast, something Rotary is proud to be a part of.

John Nisbet and Jim Dwyer were welcomed back from holidays. Unfortunately Marie Bennett is housebound with a broken wrist because she can't drive, so a phone call or a outing for a cuppa would be most appreciated.

Father of the Year Breakfast
Ian Cairns thanked the Club for supporting this year's FOTY, and especially Doug Maclean for all his work behind the scenes for 4 years. A copy of the brochure was left on the tables to give everyone an idea of some of the entries. Feedback on the event will be asked for next week.

Showgates - 30 October to 1 November (3 days)
Doug Maclean advised that he is preparing the Showgate roster for 3 days from Friday October 30 to Sunday November 1. Please email Doug if you are UNABLE to attend, otherwise your name will go on the roster.

Alternative to Schoolies Fundraiser
Svet Lineham advised that the film night went well and $650 was raised. She thanked all those who came and if you couldn't make it on the night, she is still accepting donations.

Produce Table for Sariri Project
Tony Austin reminded Rotarians of the produce table and encouraged the purchase of some home made jam, lemons and oranges. The flower arrangements in the centre of tables were also for sale. Funds go to the Sariri Project. He is also looking for bakers to contribute to a cake stall to be held at the end of October - date to be confirmed. Easily wrapped cakes and slices would be greatly appreciated.

Update on Roy Slater
Roy has been on chemo now for two weeks and is starting to feel the effects of the treatment, which makes him very tired. Otherwise, he is feeling fine.

Warrnambool & District Foodshare
Our Club has had a request from Dedy Friebe the Executive Officer of Warrnambool and District Food Share for helpers to conduct the raffles sales at the Hampden League Grand Final at the Reid Oval on September 26. All proceeds will go to Food Share. Helpers are needed between 9.45am and 2.30pm at both gates and some circulating through the crowd prior to match start. Could you please let Rob Cuzens know of your availability.

MSP Photography
Frank Monger, Franchise Owner of MSP Photography will be coming to Warrnambool on Friday to photograph surviving WW2 veterans at the RSL and nursing homes. Frank as asked for this information to be circulated amongst Club members because he's sure some members will know of people he could photograph. See above flyer for details.

Message from  PP Peter B. Simons
District 9780 Foundation Fundraising Chair 2015-16
The Rotary International exchange rate is going to become even less favourable for us Aussies as of September 1  as it goes from AUD 1.30 to AUD 1.36 for the same USD buying power.  If you are considering contribution to our Rotary Foundation, Centurion or any other Foundation program this year the best time to contribute is now.  As of September 1 (next Tuesday) the less attractive rate will apply to any contributions and one would suspect it will be even less active as the year progresses.

RCW Warrnambool East is once again mounting the City of Warrnambool Art Show which is scheduled for 25-27 September, with the gala opening scheduled for Friday evening September 25. 70% of the funds raised will go towards supporting the local community. This year the primary local focus will be to assist Lifeline South West Vic, to install a call back phone system. The remaining 30% of the funds will go towards continuing work the club has been doing over the last few years in East Timor, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Tickets to the Gala Opening are now selling at $20 per person. Attendees are automatically in the draw, announced on the night, for 2 nights for two at a 4 star Melbourne hotel.  Drinks and canapes served, accompanied by the Warrnambool City Jazz Band playing on stage background music. Several further afield artists will be exhibiting for the first time this year.
Contact Roger Cussen, Convener, Art Show Committee, on 0409389080, or let Judy Ross know.

Congratulations Rachel who won $7.00.

Finesmaster Ian Cairns was thorough in his coverage and if anyone thought they had escaped, they were then nabbed by his Random Number Draw.

The Chair Rachel Furnell introduced Ken Radley, Youth Development Officer for the Warrnambool City Council. Ken spoke about his role as Youth Development Officer and how it aims to engage and connect youth with their communities. This involves working with a diverse range of young people. One of the most inspiring groups is the Youth Council and he introduced the Youth Mayor, Declan Primmer who is in his fourth year on the Council.

Declan described the role of the Warrnambool City Youth Council which is a youth led and coordinated group that provides members with the opportunity to assist local government in understanding the needs of young people. The Warrnambool Youth Council exists to advocate the opinions, issues and concerns of young people with the goal of enhancing opportunities and outcomes for the youth of Warrnambool.  He also spoke about his role as Youth Mayor and the duties undertaken. One of the main projects conducted by the Youth Council is the Youth Achiever Awards.

Tom O'Sullivan, who is on the Warrnambool Youth Council, described the Warrnambool and Moyne Youth Achiever Awards as an annual event coordinated by the Youth Councils of Warrnambool and Moyne. The event is a celebration of young people's achievements providing the community with the opportunity to celebrate the exceptional talents of youth in the region.

The awards will be held Wednesday 10 February, 2016 at the Lighthouse Theatre. Categories include: Arts and Culture; Community and Leadership; Academic; Sport; Overall Runners Up; Overall Winners. Last year over 160 nominations were received.

Rotary Club of Warrnambool was thanked for their continued support in sponsoring this award.

Karla gave an excellent presentation to a packed audience. She spoke about Germany, her home in Desden, her family and sisters she is so close to, and also her grandparents. Karla described the food, the Octoberfest and schooling. Her school in Germany is small compared to Brauer College where it took her a few days to find her way around.  Her interests include swimming, music, badminton, bike riding and shopping. Her presentation was backed up with some great photos. Well done Karla and thanks also for the German sweets! Let's hope the weather warms up so you can do some bike riding and swimming, and of course, some shopping!

Karla is currently staying with Svet and Russell Lineham and we all welcome her to our country.

Photo: Ben Curtis and Judy Ross at the Australian Citizenship ceremony on Thursday.

Background:

In February 2009 our Club jointly hosted the visiting Group Study Exchange team from Canada and Washington State, whilst they were in Warrnambool. This team was a specialist team related to the timber industry. Phillip and Judy hosted the youngest member of the team, Ben Curtis, who shortly after his return to Canada, lost his job due to the global financial crisis. Ben went back to Uni and after further study and further disappointment in the Canadian job market, returned to Australia to work in the timber industry in the Otways, through a contact he had made whilst here on the GSE trip. He is now based in Ballarat and works in the Ballarat/Beaufort areas.

He kept in touch with Judy who was delighted to act as a referee for him in his application for permanent residency, which was successful. So, through Rotary we welcome another Australian Citizen.

Pirate Night at Guides.

Karla cooked German Potato Pancakes - Kartoffelpuffer - very good!

Next week's speaker, Adrienne Anson from the CFA will talk about fire safety in the home - electric blankets, older style gas wall heaters that have burned through to the back wall over time, open fires, chimney fires, bird nests adjoining chimneys, electrical wiring chewed through by mice, recharging lithium-ion batteries, switches on electrical cables attached to lamps, clothes dryers over heating and permit requirements for bonfires of tree trimmings.
The Satnav - by Pam Ayres

I have a little Satnav,
It sits therein my car
A Satnav is a driver's friend,
It tells you where you are.

I have A little Satnav,
I've had it all my life
It's better than the normal ones,
My satnav is my wife.
It gives me full instructions,
Especially how to drive

"It's sixty miles an hour", it says,
"You're doing sixty five".
It tells me when to stop and start
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever,
Safe to overtake.
It tells me when a light is red,
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively,
Just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front,
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account,
It specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver,
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car,
It still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling,
Each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it,
And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed
It washes all my shirts and things,
And keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages,
And my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then,
I could turn the bugger off.
