Weekly Message

This week saw the Garden Show event come to fruition.
Congratulations to Anne Adams for organising a very successful garden show.  Anne had her fearless wingman Tony Austin working together on the day and throughout the preceding week.  Many people worked to make the garden show a success.  The show was successful in so many ways: we made money, we had a good time, we watched good event management in practice, we safeguarded the Club against risk impact, we met lots of people and we watched newer Rotarians step up and do an amazing job.  And the sun shone, and I was lucky enough to sit with Keith McLeod on the gate and had the most fun I’ve had in a long time.   I believe the Garden Show was a success because of:

Good Organizational Skills
  • Anne had developed a good strategy/plan based on knowledge and experience together with an underlying love of gardening. (knowledge of the task)
  • We had Rotarians stepping up and taking responsibility for organisation and doing tasks they were sometimes not used to.  i.e., we had a good number of members taking the lead in different areas.
  • The event gave some new people a chance to offer their skills.
  • We probably had the most efficient risk management assessment and set up that I’ve come across to date.
  • We have a range of skills in the club now including event management, OHS risk management, people managers, advertising, computer, cooking skills and so on that makes planning and running this event easier.
  • We did somewhat overcalculate on scones!
Networking savvy
  • Anne sourced good gardens for the event and liaised with the garden owners who were keen and onside – effective consultation.
  •  Rotarians, Friends of Rotary and other volunteers were bought together to spread the load – so we had adequate resources who all knew what they were doing.
  • We all worked well together although Anne and Tony may have had their moments (joking) - there was really good teamwork.
  • The successfulness of the event demonstrated the effectiveness of talking to people – not just emailing and texting.
Resilience and Adaptability
  • Nothing in the lead up to the Garden show and during the event was insurmountable.
  • Flexibility and adaptability overcame any obstacle we came up against.
  • The garden owners were so helpful it made the organising easy.
Dedication to the patron
  • Having the gardeners who clearly love their gardening meant that patrons could ask questions and their knowledge was relevant and high level.
Anne thanked and congratulated all involved and I took the opportunity to thank Anne for her organisation and commitment to this event.

We had apologies from Greg Lee, Chris Stebbing, Ann Body, Andrew Body, David Brown, Ian Sharman, Duncan Stalker, Glen Brotchie, Terry O’Neill, Rachel Furnell and Trevor Williams.

Next week is the visit by the District Governor Ian McKay.  This is an important event in our calendar and gives us the opportunity to let the DG know how we are going.

The Noorat Show is coming up in a couple of weeks, Tony is organising this.

We will be having a joint Xmas Party with Warrnambool Daybreak this year on Sunday 26th November in the afternoon I believe.  More on this to come.  It would be great to have as many members as possible attending, The general this party is that this should be in addition to our Xmas party,

Kelly Curran thankfully stepped in to run the Fashion on the Field event as it was Melbourne Cup night.  The finalists were Robbie Blackmore, Alan Bowes with binoculars, and Margaret Ross all of whom very graciously did a spin on the catwalk and were very good sports.  The grand winner was Margaret Ross looking resplendent in black with a black fascinator.

Kelly then held a sweep, and the winner was Sharon Kenny who kindly shared her chocolates leading to yet another crash in my diet.
Last but by no means least is that this Thursday is Anne Adams birthday – a big one.  Happy Birthday Anne and we wish you all the best and many more.

Have a great week everyone.

WISECRACK of the Week from John Beks
I’M FINE!  THANK YOU ….

There is nothing the matter with me,
I’m as healthy as I can be.
I have arthritis in both my knees
And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin,
But I’m awfully well for the shape that I’m in.

Arch supports I have for my feet,
Or I wouldn’t be able to be on the street.
Sleep is denied me night after night,
But every morning I find I’m all right.
My memory’s failing, my head’s in a spin,
But I’m awfully well for the shape that I’m in.

The moral is this, as my tale I unfold –
That for you and me, who are growing old,
It’s better to say “I’m fine” with a grin,
Than to let folks know the real shape we are in.

Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said.
But sometimes I wonder, as I get into bed,
With my ears in the drawer, my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table, until I wake up.
‘Ere sleep overtakes me, I say to myself:
“Is there anything else, I should lay on the shelf?”

When I was young, my slippers were red,
I could kick my heels over my head.
When I was older, my slippers were blue,
But still I could dance the whole night through.
Now that I’m old, my slippers are black,
I walk to the store and puff my way back.

How do I know, that my youth is all spent?
Well, my “Get up and go” has got up and went.
But I really don’t mind, when I think with a grin,
Of all the grand places my “Get up” has bin.

I get up each morning and dust off my wits
And pick up the paper and read the “Obits”:
If my name is still missing, I know I’m not dead,
So I have a good breakfast and go back to bed.
