Rotary Meeting Tuesday 13 th August 2019

 

Call to order by Ian Cairns.

Svet was invited to the podium for the invocation and proceeded to read a well-received
personalised invocation and toast.

President David welcomed our club guests Johannes (exchange student), Margaret Ross and Ricky &
Mary Tuck. Johannes was called to the podium (and was looking a little worried) until David assured
him all was well and proceeded to present Johannes with his Rotary badge.

As there were no announcements, Johannes was asked to fill us in on his activities last week which
included a trip to Horsham for the Youth Exchange orientation where he met the other district
exchange students as well as Mary who is the other exchange student in Warrnambool. Johannes
also mentioned he’d attended the play Macbeth at the school and had visited his first AFL game,
which was Old Collegians versus “someone in blue”.

 

Mal Price informed members that our Australian Flag was missing, as well as the 4-way test banner
being broken (which he offered to fix). Thanks go to Master Sleuth Steve who used his super powers
during the evening to uncover the whereabouts of the missing flag.

Ian Cairns thanked those who had attended early to assist in the preliminary screening of the Father
of the Year entries. “It’s a big job but a very rewarding one” he said. “We have received a record
number of entries, approximately 1400, but not only are the numbers up but the quality of the
entries has also improved. We get a great response from most schools with only a few
recalcitrants.”

Ian mentioned that they are still one short for the judging so if any Rotarian has a few hours to spare
on the Thursday between 2:30 and 5:30 please contact Ian.

Delia reminded everyone to continue collecting lids off plastic bottles. You can help out by looking
under the lid for a recycle icon with a number 2 or number 4. While they can use the other numbers
for other projects, the Envision Hands projects are keen on these two types of plastic.

Louise commenced her popular variation of the fines session with a call for fines from the floor – for
which no-one volunteered (hardly surprising!).

David then called Brian to the podium for a presentation on the Rotary Foundation. The two main
take-aways for the minute-taker from this presentation were that 1) The Rotary Foundation made
over $86million in donations to various causes in the 2018 financial year, and 2) The Rotary
Foundation provides the best ‘bang for buck” of any charity with over 100% of the funds donated
being distributed in grants, and only 5% of the interest earned being used for administration.
