Our first meeting for 2024 and President Janet (again!!!!) wasn’t available to be with us.
Terry was the only apology I was aware of (Covid hits again).
It was good to see Sarah McMahon and Nick Yandell as guests again this week. We’re working on making it a more regular thing for at least one of them. Watch this space.
Member’s announcements included:
Anne: gave us an update on where we are with the book sale organisation and reminded us of this week’s working bee. The “heavy lifting” is done, now need to complete the sorting and putting the book onto the tables.
Kelly: advised us that we will be going to the Art gallery next week (meet there at 5:45pm) and suggested we might have a meal before or after. We decided to go to the Liebig Thai after the meeting.
I took the opportunity to comment on Kelly being a “quiet achiever”. Kell organised our Christmas activities, is our programs coordinator and is the liaison person between our club and the Warrnambool Bowls Club. Kelly quietly goes about her contributions and we appreciate and thank her for what she does.
Duncan, as chairman, introduced our guest speaker (me!). I was pleased to give the club an update on the PNG OroCooa Limited (OCL) project.
In brief; OCL is now an established PNG registered company. Its core work is growing and purchasing cacao seeds (beans) and then processing and selling the beans for export. The aim of OCL is to assist Oro province farmers by helping them develop their product, purchasing their cacao beans at a fair price and providing logistical support to get the beans to OCL’s processing facility.

WHAT IS A MATRON ?
A Matron is a person, who, if she seeks to maintain discipline, is an old battle-axe.
If she does not, she has no backbone. If she is friendly and jokes with the patients, she is being familiar. Is she does not, she is stand-offish.
If she deals harshly with a nurse sent to her office, she is being hard-hearted. If she deals leniently, she is being disloyal to the ward-sister.
If she takes an interest in the details of the patient’s treatment, she is interfering. If she does not, she’s no help to anyone.
If she does frequent rounds, she’s a nuisance. If she does not, she is neglectful.
If she dresses smartly, she is frivolous. If she does not, she has absolutely no personality whatsoever.
If she is charming to visitors, she is putting on an act. If she is not, she has no social graces. If she goes away for frequent week-ends, she is shirking her responsibilities. If she does not, she thinks she is indispensable.
If she gets on well with the Hospital Board, it’s only because she knows which side her bread is buttered on. If she does not, she is an out-and-out obstructionist.
If the bills go up, she is extravagant. If they go down, she is cheese-paring and miserable.
If she is single, she lacks human understanding. If she is married, she can’t possibly be giving proper attention to her job.
If she has outside interests, she is not putting her duties first. If she has none, she’s just an old stick-in-the-mud.
If she is sitting in her office, she’s pretending to be busy. If she is not there, then she ought to be.
If she dies young, there was a wonderful future before her. If she grows old, people wish she would retire before she does any more harm.
