President's Message

Just a short report this week. The meeting on the 29 th was our May Races Meeting held
again at the Wangoom Hall catered by the Wangoom Branch of the Red Cross.

Welcome to Joan Austin, Friend of Rotary.

Apologies from Brian and Jenny Trenery, Ann, and Andrew Body, Svet Lineham, Graeme
Ward, Trevor Williams, Margaret Ross, Cathy Bligh and David Brown and Kelly Curran.

I had the opportunity to say a few words at Ian Cairns funeral last Friday. It was a beautiful
funeral where many people spoke lovingly of Ian and how he will be sadly missed. I’m sure
Mary would like to hear from members who knew Ian well over the next few weeks as she
deals with her sudden loss. Ian was buried in Ballarat Cemetery to be near his children.

A few of our members attended the Warrnambool Rotary East and Daybreak Breakfast for
the Races at RSL.

Judy finalized the Small Change Jar. The winner was Leon with the closest guess. The total was $71!

Terry undertook the sweep for the evening at short notice and did a great job. I’m glad I
didn’t win chocolates as I have very limited control. Thank you to Terry for his work much
appreciated.

Congratulations to the sweep winners, Sharon, Ian, John Hunt and Allan.
fun fact, Ian ran 2nd in the sweep in 2023.

Anne Adams filled us in on Cathys Bligh’s progress. She is doing well and moving to rehab.
There was no formal recognition for our “Fashions on the Field” low key event but if I had to choose, I’d probably pick Judy Ross and unsurprisingly Alan Bowes as winners and Brooke
and George as the most flamboyant!

Thank you to the Wangoom Red Cross for a great meal.

Next week’s meeting is at the Warrnambool Bowls Club and the speaker is speaking about
the library. Looking forward to seeing you there.

In two weeks’, time, the NYSF evening at City Memorial – this will be a big night so please
bring family or friends.

Milk bottle tops and bread tags:
I have been delivering your donations of milk bottle tops to the City Council offices. They are no longer accepting them, as the Lids for Kids project in Warrnambool is not operating at present. Instead, Wil, our guest speaker from the WCC, suggested you put the washed tops back on the washed milk bottles and place them in your yellow recycling bin.  We will update you if the Lids for Kids project is restarted.

The bread tags have been going to Bakers Delight in the  Coles carpark at the rear of Target. Feel free to drop them in if you are in the area, however if you still want to bring them to Rotary, I'm happy to deliver them on your behalf. Judy.

Wisecrack of the week
From John Beks
JUST FOR TODAY…
Just for today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for 12 hours, that would appal me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
Just for today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said: “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
Just for today I will adjust myself to what is; and I will not keep trying to adjust everything else to my own desires.
Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out. I will do at least two things I do not want to do – just for exercise. And today, if my feelings are hurt, I will not show it to anyone.
Just for today I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticise not one bit, and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.
Just for today I will have a programme. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.
Just for today I will have a quiet half-hour all by myself for meditation and relaxation. During this half-hour I will try to get a better perspective of my life.
Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that, as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.
BOWEL SCREENING
In past years around April/May I have been promoting ROTARY BOWELSCAN, with the result that a number of our members have taken up this method of testing one’s risk of Bowel Cancer. Those who have partaken in previous years will have received a reminder for an annual follow-up. The only difference is that the procedure is now performed by ENTERIX ColoVantage Bowel Screening.

Those of you interested and not yet having received a notice, please use the website where you can order direct: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024

BOWEL CANCER affects about 1 in 20 people, but can be curable, if caught early. Tragically, it claims the lives of around 100 Australians every week! If you or one of your loved ones is aged 50 or over, you are at a higher risk of bowel cancer. The good news is that if found early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. So, if you are above the 50-year age bracket, you can avail yourself of the BOWELSCAN Project, available during the months of April and May.

Note the early unsavoury warning signs: Blood in or on the stool / A recent change in bowel habits / General stomach discomfort / Weight Loss / Unexplained tiredness etc. See your Doctor! For a number of years I have not hesitated to participate. The test is completed at home, it is non-invasive and required no food nor medication restrictions. Simply collect a brushing of the sample in the reply-paid envelope included with the kit. Testing is approved by pathologists, and a letter of results will be sent to your GP. And this applied to both males and females!

Personally, I cannot consider myself immune to cancer. My family gene is in no doubt responsible for FOUR consecutive male generations of this rotten disease!

Last year, once more, I received a notice, with a NEGATIVE result in response to my annual Scan. Goes to prove that NEGATIVE news can be good news! I therefore don’t hesitate to participate once more this year, looking forward to a similar result.

Price per Test Kit: $30.00, but only available from the Website: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024
