Anne's Message


What a happy, busy Rotary meeting we had on Tuesday night as we prepared and packed birthing kits to send to PNG. Janet did a great job in getting everything ready. Visiting Rotarians from Langwarrin, Mardi and Jon Sheppard were very impressed and took quite a few photos. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something similar in the future.
 

We also welcomed Ann and Andrew Body again.
We had apologies form Brian Trenery, Ian Cairns, Tony Austin, Rachel Furnell and Chris Stebbing

Sunday morning Cathy Bligh, Judy Ross, Terry O’Neil and I worked as marshals for the Athletics Club's half marathon. I was at a point on the Merri at the back of Merrivale I have never seen before. It all seemed to go well and thank you to the team. I think we have raised $320.

Thursday evening 11 of us went to dinner at the hotel Warrnambool and then to the movies $2210 was raised on the night by the 4 Rotary Clubs in Warrnambool This is then matched by the Bill Gates Foundation resulting in$6630 for Polio Plus. Well done to Day Break Club and especially Cheryl Bellman who does the heavy lifting.

-Tony Austin will follow up with the Salvation Army to see if we can give them some support with a working bee
-Janet is progressing the Memorial Tree
-Everyone is reminded to make sure your working with children is up to date
-DG Kathy Rivett will be at our meeting on October 11th

Milk Bottle Caps
Letting all members know we are collecting milk bottle tops (Please wash them thoroughly) and bread bag tags. Bring them along too Rotary and Judy can take them. 
The 5c Jar
is now known as The Loose Change Jar.  We will continue collecting money for the END POLIO NOW project. We are THIS CLOSE.    
Membership Moment
Some of us find it difficult to invite others to join our club because we have done that before and were rejected. I think we have all been there and cone that but unfortunately, that is a fact of product selling. I said at a recent board meeting that convincing someone to join a club is like trying to sell something to a potential buyer who really not sure if they want the produce or not. When talking to someone about Rotary, we should be promoting opportunities of friendship, networking, hearing great community speakers at meeting, opportunity for self development if you wish and the many successful projects with which we (and the wide Rotary world) have completed. It’s not all hard work and hard slogging.

Badge Duty 
As mentioned on Tuesday night, now we have our new Dinner Badges, and the Badge board has been adapted to hold them, we will re-commence the role of Fellowship duty each week, whereby two members will greet members and guests and hand out the name badges.  Judy will be keeping a grip on the Badge board until the storage area is sorted out - currently a huge mess - not a safe repository for over $700 worth of badges.  She will be up at the Footy club by 5.45pm each Tuesday night to hand over the board to the members on duty

Last Saturday night was horrible weather, but it was a brilliant night for a roller disco!
 
The 'Warrnambool Rollers' are a group of energetic skaters who host events in the pavilion at the showgrounds. They have hire gear available for all ages and run fortnightly casual skating sessions on Sundays. They have a roller derby team!
 
As a fun event for the school holidays, they added some black lights, fun tunes and some disco balls for a great night. With a great turn out, Brooke was onsite to add some fun UV reactive face painting. $90 was raised from the night and will be added to our yearly donation to 'Interplast' who are a charity that provides plastic facial surgery to improve the lives of those who need it most.
 
I hope you all have wonderful memories of skating in your youth, I hear Robbie was a brilliant skater!
Footy Fever
 
As I sit here tonight watching the North QLD Cowboys take on the Paramatta Eels, I am reminded that one of Victoria's biggest days is tomorrow; the AFL Grand Final. 
 
As I was raised, I was told I could support any team as long as they were not from NSW or England. And so from my father's logic, I should support the Cats tomorrow. The McLeod's also have a strong history of barracking for Geelong. I do also Admire Gary Ablett.
 
The ABC has written an article on how the Cats can win tomorrow using statistics from the season highlighting where the cats can pick up the advantage. 
One example is:
'That's compounded by the sheer amount of times Geelong gets the ball up forward. The Cats generate the biggest inside-50 differential of any side this year. When it comes to getting the ball inside 50, Geelong does it 25 per cent more than their opposition.'

On the other side of the fence, the Sydney Swans did a brilliant effort last week against Collingwood.  For 2 teams to go toe to toe for 80 minutes and be 1 point a part, shows the talent and skill of those involved. If there is anything I have learnt from AFL communities while in my 2 years of being a Victorian, is follow any team bar Collingwood.
 
So overall I look forward to watching a brilliant game tomorrow with a high level of athleticism, may the better team win. Also keep an eye on the crowds and look for John Hunt who will be a part of the 80,000 in attendance.
 
A thoughtful note from the NRL game tonight,
Mitchell Moses is a player in the Paramatta Eels. Last week Mitchell lost his Grandmother, and on Monday laid her to rest. Today, as he travelled to North QLD, his partner went into labour. 2hrs before he played the game tonight, his 1st born baby was born. He had a baby girl, and watched through facetime. Mitchell has had a rollercoaster 2 weeks, and now to be heading into the NRL grand final next weekend. One can only imagine the mental and physical strength he must be going through currently.

This day in 1846, astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle became the first person ever to observe the planet Neptune, the existence of which had been mathematically predicted by Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier and John Couch Adams.
 
Just yesterday, the James Webb telescope has released the latest images of Neptune with more detail than we have ever seen before. The image may not look like much, but it gives us clear indications about its rings and environmental factors, wow!
