President's Message

At the meeting on the 9/6/24 we welcomed our guest speaker Caytlyn Sharp and her mother Cindy McDougall. We also welcomed Dapinderjit Singh for the evening. It was good to see John Hunt back from a few weeks away, apologies for not indicating his return at the meeting.

We have a number of members away on holidays seeking some warmth. Apologies from Judy Ross, Lola Lee, Cath Bligh, Peter Smid. Good to see John Hunt, David Brown, and Glen Brotchie back.

Tony Austin, Isobel Siebel, and I attended Tooram Cemetery to display the template for the
Memorial Tree which has been constructed in low grade thin metal to show us what the tree might look like in situ. The tree is to be installed just near the entrance of the cemetery as you come through the front left-hand gate (when facing the cemetery from
the road off Hopkins Point Road). As you enter you came turn right into the top car park or go straight ahead down the hill with the building that has three roller doors on your left. At that junction of the car park road and the road that goes directly down the hill is a
big rock on the right-hand side and it is proposed the Memorial goes behind the rock supported by a tilt slab held up by 2 H shaped beams to ensure stability against the wind.

Members of the Warrnambool Cemetery Trues were present as were staff from the cemetery. All were very happy with the tree which we agreed should be populated with leaves and butterflies from the start then people can come and pick which leaf or butterfly they want engraved. The next step is finalizing the “real” tree and bedding down the procedures for the community to be able to place a leaf or butterfly on the tree. This project is now progressing well, and we are thankful to all the hours put in by Brad at McLaren Steel and Ted Argyle for the tree, leaf, and butterfly designs.

Members announcements.
RYDER
Chris Stebbing reminded members about the upcoming RYDER event – he will circulate an email about this.
Change over Dinner
Remember we want a good attendance – booking is online so if you would like you can give Chris a rung and he will book for you. Please come along and support Kelly as incoming President and farewell me we would love to see you there.

I hate to say this but there may have been a third announcement, but Leon and I couldn’t remember so if I’ve left something out please let me know and I can circulate it by a separate email.

Our speaker for the program tonight was Caytlyn Sharp speaking to us about her athletic pursuits. Caytlyn has recently competed in Fiji at the Oceania Athletics championships where she achieved 4th place in the women’s Open Para Long Jump. A great effort and the result of a lot
of training.

On Tuesday night the thought did pass through my head that Glen Brotchie was not looking well, and I circulated to members the fact he is in Geelong University hospital having had open heart surgery. I spoke to him last night and he sounded pretty good, in fact very chatting considering what he had been through and on talking to Marion, who saw him today, I learned he was in fact undergoing the effects of fentanyl but is doing as well as can be expected despite seeing pink birds in the room. He does however have a long recovery on antibiotics to protect his heart valves. I’m glad he’s on the mend and we will keep you updated. I have sent our best wishes from the club.

Quote for the week
“But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

Have a great week! Remember to book for Change over we want as many as possible so please
bring partners too.

President Janet Blackley

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RACHEL!
Rotarian Rachel celebrated her wonderful 40th Birthday over the past week with a fantastic party on Saturday night. It is a blessing that we have such an amazing person in our club. Rachel has championed various projects such as RYLA, camp quality cabin and other youth projects. Rachel was presented with a Paul Harris fellowship last year which was truly deserving.
We love 'ya Rach!
Wisecrack of the week
From John Beks
My Ills and Pills
When I was young and suffered few ills
I swore I would never resort to pills.
Tis happy youth that can laugh and sing
It’s that thing called age that has the sting.
I’ve reached that time as I now write this
That even one pill I’m afraid to miss.
I’ve drops for my eyes and drops for my ears,
A spray for my nose where the problems arose.
I suffer from bouts of painful gout
And cramps in the night give me a horrible fright.
Gastric reflux depends on a pill
To make my tummy behave and the contents stay still.
For lying awake – there’s a pill I can take
And a pain-stopping pill for arthritis I’d kill.
My heart’s playing up – it’s nearly worn out. So I do what I have to, and try not to pout.
There are blockers for this
And blockers for that
Pills for the water and some for the fat.
I have to keep fit – but I feel a real git,
With barbells in hand, keeping pace with a band.
I pedal a bike – it goes nowhere at all
And march up and down in the hospital hall.
I’m in such a mess – that I have to confess
For the aches and the chills
And aforementioned ills
I will never forego my collection of pills.
Reminder about the Container Deposit Scheme raising money towards our Early loss memorial project.

If you are able to use the app, you will be able to find our cause under charities. If the app is being too difficult, you can use the barcode below. Simply scan the barcode at any of the return depots, then start inserting your bottles.

If technology is not your friend, feel free to drop bottles at Brooke and George's place which can be taken out to the depots (Kelp street).
