MEETING 18 FEBRUARY 2020
Call to order by Ian Cairns who invited Duncan to perform the invocation and toast.

Trevor Williams stepped in as acting President for the evening, welcomed Guests
  • John Clue, District Governor nominee
  • Laurie Fisher, Guest speaker
  • Marion Brotchie
  • As well as regular guests Joey and Margaret
Joey filled us in with what’s been happening lately.  He’d been camping with Trevor, catching and eating some yabbies.  Had been to the swimming sports with the school, an AFLW game with Robert and had been out for dinner a couple of times.  He’d also tried out lawn bowls.  Trevor asked for his rating of his dinner locations and he gave a 9/10 to the Lady Bay and a “good as always 8/10” to the Liebig

Members Announcements

Glen reminded everyone to get busy with the Dinner Auction.  The folders of businesses to approach were being handed out this meeting and asked everyone to get started sooner rather than later.

Anne Adams reminded all members that the next meeting on the 25th Feb will be at the RSL, same time and cost.  Anne also reminded members of the Science Engineering challenge at Deakin on April 29 and called for volunteers to help with the day.

Anne Donaldson informed members that they had a very successful Days for Girls session last Sunday and thanked all who attended to help out

Duncan Stalker informed members that there will be memorial at the RSL on Tue 25th Feb at 2:30pm for Wally Hammond and Eric Williams.  He also informed us that there are some works around the RSL which may be affecting car parking and entrances.

John Clue, District Governor was asked to make a few remarks.  He informed he’d been AG for the last 3 years and thanked Brian for his assistance with his past and future roles.  He filled us in on preparations for next year, and reminded us of the conference in Swan Hill on 20-22 March.  He also mentioned next year’s conference will be in Port Fairy including at least one event in Warrnambool.  John congratulated Rachel Furnell on her appointment to the conference committee and closed with a few administrative reminders.

Richard Hawker announced that he would be leaving the club after making a decision to move to Torquay to be with family.  He asked members to consider taking on the very important role of Camp Quality coordinator.  More details on this position will follow in next week’s bulletin.

Robbie reminded members that there was a morning tea scheduled for Saturday morning at Glenn and Marions.  Donations would be going to a worth cause.

Guest Speaker, Laurie Fisher.  Donations in Kind.

Glenn Brotchie introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Laurie Fisher from the Rotary Club of West Footscray’s Donations in Kind.  Laurie is Marion’s brother and Glenn’s brother in law.

Laurie has been a rotary club member since 1984 and in 2000 moved to the Rotary Club of West Footscray.  In 2010 the Donations in Kind coordinator retired and Laurie was “co-opted” into the role and has been the full time manager of DIK for the last 10 years.

Essentially, DIK take unwanted goods from Australia and ship them to needy countries overseas.  It is fully run by volunteers and funded by a group of sponsoring Rotary Clubs.  It was established in 1978 by Fred Wright after a trip to the Solomons.

Since the year 2000, they have shipped over 600 containers with approximately $63million in goods to over 32 developing countries.  The goods are made up primarily of Medical equipment and supplies, Educational equipment and supplies, and clothing.

The goods collected are available to any Rotary International service project.  Rotary clubs arrange their own projects and approach DIK to help source equipment and supplies.
Further information is available at the DIK website, http://www.rotarydik.org

Acting President Trevor Williams closed the meeting, thanking our guest speaker and noting that the club would be sorry to see Richard Hawker leave and wished him luck with his upcoming auction.   He also thanked our guests John, Laurie, Marion, Joey and Margaret.
