When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation. In addition, Rotary clubs from the United States and Mexico have been investing in the...

Chair Richard Hawker introduced Leigh Emberton, the State Manager for Camp Quality Victoria and Tasmania. Our Club's involvement with Camp Quality started 22 years ago when in 1999 a cabin was purchased for use by families of children living with cancer to give them some respite away from home. The redevelopment of this cabin in 2014 provided an exciting opportunity to not only see this project continue, but to revitalise the booking process and increase the uptake of nights away in Warrnambool. As a result there has been a resurgence of attendance at the cabin.

Following each visit to the Warrnambool cabin, families are asked to complete a survey in order to gather information about how Camp Quality can improve the experience. Of the 35 families that utilised the respite cabin in Warrnambool during the period, 22 completed the survey to support the continued improvement of this service.

Camp Quality's commitment to providing equal opportunity to families and encouraging the use of the cabin within the priority families has seen the implementation of the 'single use only' policy whereby a family can only access the respite cabin once as a general rule.

For the period 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2015 35 families attended the Warrnambool Cabin in comparison to 17 for the same period 2013-2014. The 35 families enjoyed 161 nights away during this time. The average length of stay for each family is a 3 day weekend, with some families choosing to stay up to a maximum of 7 days.

January, February and September remain as the peak months for families to visit Warrnambool. Often during these peak months a wait list exists for families who wish to utilise the cabin should the priority family withdraw prior to or mid-way through their stay.

In the period September 2014-2015 only the month of June had a zero occupancy.  Camp Quality will continue to promote the year round opportunities within the Warrnambool region as a great place to visit and targeting families that have non-school aged children during the school term remains a priority.

When asked what could be improved the following items will be acted on to improve the experience for future visits:

  • Clearer communication of the check-in process for when we arrived at the cabin - this was identified in early October 2014 and addressed with a new welcome letter to each individual family
  • Spare bedding for kids.
  • Plastic plates and cups for kids to use for mealtimes.
  • Baby gate for the entry of the cabin, so we could enjoy the patio.
  • Welcome book or guest book for families to suggest to other families things to do during their stay.

Leigh also went on to list the highlights families listed, and whether the experience meet expectations. Over half of the families stated that the cleanliness, suitability and accessibility of the cabin exceeded their expectations but it was the location that they were particularly impressed by, exceeding the expectations of 79% of families and 94% of families would recommend the experience to other families. Eighty four percent of families stated that there were plenty of activities in the area that their family enjoyed, with 68% stating that Warrnambool was an "amazing" holiday destination. This is great feedback, allowing for the fact that up to 89% of families travelled between 3-5 hours to get to Warrnambool.

The Camp Quality Recreation team has listened to this feedback and will look to bring a Family Camp to this region next calendar year.

It was acknowledged that without the generous support of both the Rotary Club of Warrnambool and Surfside Holiday Park, this unique and valuable service would not be possible and Leigh thanked Rotary on behalf of the Camp Quality Victorian Families, Staff and Volunteers.

A husband went to the sheriff's department to report that his wife was missing:

Husband: - My wife is missing. She went shopping yesterday and has not come home.

Sergeant: - What is her height?

Husband: - Gee, I’m not sure. A little over five feet tall.

Sergeant: - Weight?

Husband: - Don't know. Not slim, not really fat.

Sergeant: - Colour of eyes?

Husband: - Never noticed.

Sergeant: - Colour of hair?

Husband: - Changes a couple times a year. .. . May be dark brown.

Sergeant: - What was she wearing?

Husband: - Could have been a skirt or shorts. I don’t remember exactly.

Sergeant: - What kind of car did she go in?

Husband: - She went in my truck.

Sergeant: - What kind of truck was it?

Husband: - A 2014 Ford F150 King Ranch 4 X4 with Eco-boost 5.0L V8 engine special ordered with manual transmission. It has a custom matching white cover for the bed. Custom leather seats, DVD with Navigation, 21 channel CB radio, 6 cup holders, 4 power outlets, custom floor mats, trailering package with gold hitch. Put on special alloy wheels and off road Michelin's. My wife put a small scratch on the driver's door. At this point the husband started tearing up.

Sergeant: - Don't worry .......We’ll find your truck.
