This Tuesday saw a great energised room full of Rotarians an guests. We finally inducted Rob McDonald and Debbie Ferguson to our wonderful club. We all look forward to the fellowship they will being, as well as new ideas and ways of thinking.
We had a wonderful On the Couch session with John Hunt interviewing new member Ken Sharpe. It is always wonderful to hear about everyone's life story, and Ken didn't disappoint. From marrying the girl next door to the never ending journey of moving, Ken took our imaginations out of the room to visit nearly every place he lived. We look forward to the fellowship and wisdom from his many adventures.
Congratulations to Sharon and Kelly on their fundraising movie night on Friday. It was great to see many faces there. I am sure Kelly will update us to say how much they raised.
Rotarian Greg Lee's beautiful daughter will be laid to rest tomorrow. If you are interested in supporting the family, the service will be held tomorrow (Sept 30th), 11am at the Matilda Room (Warrnambool Racecourse).
Rotarian Janet Blackley's beautiful son will be laid to rest this week as well. If you are interested in supporting the family, the service will be on Oct 3rd at 2pm. Located at Le Pine Funerals Ferntree Gully Chapel, 1096 Burwood Highway. Following the service, drinks at Furntree Gully Hotel Sports Bar, 1130 Burwood Hwy.
This week are having dinner and fellowship together before some of us head down to the Lighthouse theatre to see the live musical 'Mary Poppins'. Those who do not wish to see the musical can stay for some fellowship.

There is a lot of maintenance that needs to happen at the cabin in the next 12 months. If you would like to assist on this hands on project and join a small camp quality committee, please contact Rachel.

Warrnambool Community Garden - Open Day
Celebrating 15 Years

About the event Our gates are open for everyone this spring - it’s all about community, music, laughing and gardening at this free event. Held on the lands of the Peek Whurrong and Maar Nations, celebrate the amazing transformation that’s happened in the last 15 years.
Beginning with a Welcome to Country, followed by live music featuring local musicians including Home Made Jam, Norman Miller, Bruce Campbell and the Common Ground plus the Warrnambool City Band there will be lot's to see.
There are plenty of free activities for the family, including the opening of the children’s garden and Sprouts Club area. We’ll be showcasing the renewed all abilities gardening area and nursery with plants for sale on the day.
A sizzling BBQ with meat and vegetarian options will look after healthy appetites. Pick up a map to explore points of interest including the quarry amphitheatre, herb garden, chooks, new shed, composting, worm farm and frog pond.
We’ll have displays from community organisations and a visual history of the near 20 years of the Warrnambool Community Garden. Have your cameras ready to take snaps and lodge an image or two in our photo competition.
We're also looking for some people to help volunteer on the day, bump in, for two-hour shifts and bump out. Volunteers get a free lunch, contact grow@wcg3280.org.au if you're interested.

MUMMY, HOW OLD ARE YOU ?
8-Year old, Mary, and her mother are walking through the Mall
together one day.
“Mummy”, says little Mary, “how old are you?”
“ Darling, you should never ask a lady what her age is”.
“Why not?” demands the child.
“Well, that is something you will understand one day, when you’re
grown up”
“Mummy”, asks Mary, “why have you never told me, why you and
Daddy got divorced?”
“Darling”, responds Mum in exasperation: that is something still
very painful for Mummy, and I really just can’t talk about it now”.
A few days later, at school, Mary mentions this conversation to her
friend, Jane, who explains, how to get around her problems. “All you
have to do is to get hold of your Mum’s driver’s licence, and it has all the
information about her, you want!”
So, whilst Mum was getting dinner ready, Mary rummages through
her handbag, and finds the driver’s licence.
“Mum! I know how old you are! You are 35!”
“ And I know why you and Daddy got a divorce! You only got an
F in sex!”

Further to my announcement tonight, community members may have heard about the Warrnambool Effluent Management Strategy (WEMS) via online platforms, radio and media adverts. Below is some information about the WEMS.
Planning for the future
As part of our vision to go beyond water for strong communities, we’re committed to being bold in our work to care for and protect the environment. This commitment is reflected in our day-to-day work and is an important factor when we plan and undertake many of our projects.
One of those projects is a major upgrade of the Warrnambool Sewage Treatment Plant. The project is designed to cater for population, business and industry growth while continuing to protect public health and the environment.
The plant, located near Thunder Point in Warrnambool, treats sewage and trade waste from the city as well as Allansford and Koroit by removing physical, chemical and biological contaminants. The aim is to produce treated effluent that is suitable to discharge to the ocean according to the Environment Protection Act 2017 and site-specific discharge licence requirements.
The $85 million upgrade project will provide additional capacity to help manage the sewage and trade waste. It will also improve the quality of treated effluent discharged into the ocean. For example, improving the inlet screens and adding chemical dosing and UV technology will improve solids removal, reduce nutrient levels and disinfect the effluent, providing an additional layer of protection for the environment and public health.
Developing an Effluent Management Strategy
In parallel with the upgrade project, we need to consider our community's long-term expectations on how we should manage treated effluent in the future. There are general concerns worldwide about the increasing impact that all sewage outfalls are having on the marine environment and the need to further consider biodiversity impacts and human health concerns. There are also growing calls for effluent to be treated to a safer standard and reused for beneficial purposes, supporting adaptation to climate change.
There are a number of options available to us and we have to decide which best serves the community and our stakeholders. That's why we're developing an Effluent Management Strategy.
