Tuesday night we had Danilli Hocking from Vinnies to talk about managing an op shop. It was a great presentation and very insightful. I have had many experiences with Vinies over the years with my work and everyone is always helpful. Vinnies are looking for volunteers and if you have any spare time and would like to work at Vinnies, please reach out to Danilli.
We received some sad news on Thursday night with the passing of Ron Bishop. Ron was a fantastic member of our club and will be missed. Deepest sympathy to Ron’s family and will let everyone know when the funeral will be.
A few members attended Day Breaks movie fundraiser on Thursday night and from all reports they had a great night and raised quiet a lot of money. Well done to Daybreak.
On Thursday 10th October was World Mental Health Day, and the theme is ‘It is time to prioritise mental Health in the workplace’. Mental health is extremely important, and you need to prioritise your mental health. One of the biggest issues in the workplace is burnout. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight, it’s gradual and can take hold before you’re truly aware of it. If you are struggling it’s important to reach out to your loved ones, friends or colleagues. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind to one another. A quote I always say is treat someone how you would like to be treated. Its always important to do self-care and do something nice for yourself. Please see below a calendar for October and some tips of mindfulness.

Warrnambool Community Garden - Open Day
Celebrating 15 Years

About the event Our gates are open for everyone this spring - it’s all about community, music, laughing and gardening at this free event. Held on the lands of the Peek Whurrong and Maar Nations, celebrate the amazing transformation that’s happened in the last 15 years.
Beginning with a Welcome to Country, followed by live music featuring local musicians including Home Made Jam, Norman Miller, Bruce Campbell and the Common Ground plus the Warrnambool City Band there will be lot's to see.
There are plenty of free activities for the family, including the opening of the children’s garden and Sprouts Club area. We’ll be showcasing the renewed all abilities gardening area and nursery with plants for sale on the day.
A sizzling BBQ with meat and vegetarian options will look after healthy appetites. Pick up a map to explore points of interest including the quarry amphitheatre, herb garden, chooks, new shed, composting, worm farm and frog pond.
We’ll have displays from community organisations and a visual history of the near 20 years of the Warrnambool Community Garden. Have your cameras ready to take snaps and lodge an image or two in our photo competition.
We're also looking for some people to help volunteer on the day, bump in, for two-hour shifts and bump out. Volunteers get a free lunch, contact grow@wcg3280.org.au if you're interested.

FRIENDS ARE DIAMOND
I am slightly suspicious of people who do not have old friends. Old friends keep you honest, they keep you grounded in reality. They connect you to your past and provide security for your future.
Old friends instinctively know what is best kept stored in the dark recesses of memory and which speak with vitality of the great gift of life we have been for each other.
Without old friends how do we get through life?
How do we get through the ups and downs without friends who know from experience, our experience together, exactly how you feel and what to do or say?
The kind of friend who you would turn to in times of trouble, that’s the most important criterion for friendship.
Contact, shared experience and time is needed for friendships to deepen into meaningful, life-enhancing relationships.
The value and benefits of “old” friends, the emotional intimacy, and the deep and old connections, cannot be overestimated.
They are the sustenance of life. The type of friend that can be counted on one hand.

Further to my announcement tonight, community members may have heard about the Warrnambool Effluent Management Strategy (WEMS) via online platforms, radio and media adverts. Below is some information about the WEMS.
Planning for the future
As part of our vision to go beyond water for strong communities, we’re committed to being bold in our work to care for and protect the environment. This commitment is reflected in our day-to-day work and is an important factor when we plan and undertake many of our projects.
One of those projects is a major upgrade of the Warrnambool Sewage Treatment Plant. The project is designed to cater for population, business and industry growth while continuing to protect public health and the environment.
The plant, located near Thunder Point in Warrnambool, treats sewage and trade waste from the city as well as Allansford and Koroit by removing physical, chemical and biological contaminants. The aim is to produce treated effluent that is suitable to discharge to the ocean according to the Environment Protection Act 2017 and site-specific discharge licence requirements.
The $85 million upgrade project will provide additional capacity to help manage the sewage and trade waste. It will also improve the quality of treated effluent discharged into the ocean. For example, improving the inlet screens and adding chemical dosing and UV technology will improve solids removal, reduce nutrient levels and disinfect the effluent, providing an additional layer of protection for the environment and public health.
Developing an Effluent Management Strategy
In parallel with the upgrade project, we need to consider our community's long-term expectations on how we should manage treated effluent in the future. There are general concerns worldwide about the increasing impact that all sewage outfalls are having on the marine environment and the need to further consider biodiversity impacts and human health concerns. There are also growing calls for effluent to be treated to a safer standard and reused for beneficial purposes, supporting adaptation to climate change.
There are a number of options available to us and we have to decide which best serves the community and our stakeholders. That's why we're developing an Effluent Management Strategy.
