We were pleased to welcome guests of Rotarians, Andrew Ross and Mark Powell and we had apologies from club members Ann and Andrew Body, John Hunt, Svetlana Lineham, Ann Donaldson, and Janet Blackley.

The book sale, clearance sale, is on June 12th at the Warrnambool Club. We will need some helpers to tidy up a bit on Friday 11th and plenty of helpers to tidy up afterwards. Some of our members are going to the Rotary International Convention on this weekend. Hoping we get home safely with good stories to tell.
Next week our speakers Kate Palmer and Hilary McCosh will speak about the refugee
experience in Warrnambool. It will be another good night to invite a guest.
Hopkins Falls Landcare Group – working bee at Hopkins Falls, Sunday 4th June 10 – 11.30 am. BYO gloves and spade for site maintenance.
Tree planting at Deakin University, Saturday 17th June 10 am – 12.30 pm as part of the Glenelg Hopkins CMA-Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network’s “Hopkins River tree’s for fish” planting day. Meet at the old golf course car park at Deakin, BYO wet weather gear, sturdy footware, gloves and water. Our Rotary Club has been invited by the Glenelg Hopkins CMA to be part of the larger “Rivers of Warrnambool” program. The CMA is keen for the Rotary Club to develop and have its own small project as part of the larger program.

As the end of this Rotary year approaches, it is time to send your very generous donations off to Rotary Foundation so we can get closer to our worldwide aim to END POLIO NOW!!!
To boost the amount in the jar, as has become the norm, I will be running a guessing competition for the next two weeks. All you have to do is guesstimate the value of the money in the jar! This will cost you $1 per entry and there will be a fabulous prize for the winner. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 6th June as Phillip and I will be away on 30th May. So come prepared next week 16th and on 23rd. $1 entry.

May is Rotary Bowel Scan Month BOWEL CANCER affects about 1in 20 people, but can be curable, if caught early. Tragically, it claims the lives of around 100 Australians every week. If you or one of your loved ones is aged 50 or over, you are at a higher risk of bowel cancer. The good news is that, if found early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated.
However, if you are above the 50-year age bracket, you can avail yourself of the ROTARY BOWELSCAN PROJECT, available during the month of MAY, with Tests extending into JUNE.
Note the early unsavoury warning signs:
Blood in or on the stool
A recent change in bowel habits
General stomach discomfort
Weight loss
Unexplained tiredness etc.

For a number of years I have not hesitated to participate. The test is completed at home, it is non-invasive and requires no food nor medication restrictions. Simply collect a brushing of the sample in the reply-paid envelope included with the kit. Testing is approved by pathologists, and a letter of results will be sent to your G.P. And this applies to both males and females!
Personally, I cannot consider myself immune to cancer. My family gene is no doubt responsible for FOUR consecutive male generations of this rotten disease : my grandfather, my father, two brothers, and a nephew - and that is apart from other in-laws, and only to date, as far as known !!! Last year, I received a notice, with a NEGATIVE result in response to my annual ROTARY BOWELSCAN. Goes to prove that NEGATIVE news can be GOOD news! I therefore don't hesitate to participate once more this year, looking forward to a similar result.
