Rotary and ONE, an international advocacy organization, joined other event partners in downtown Chicago on 24 September to demonstrate a commitment to ending extreme poverty and inequality and to promoting action on climate change on the eve of the United Nations launch of its Sustainable Development Goals.
The 17 ambitious goals constitute a road map for finding solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and dovetail with Rotary members’ work to create positive change in their communities and around the world. As dusk fell over Chicago, participants in the Under One Sky event held up...
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 25 September that Nigeria is now polio-free and has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. It’s been 14 months since any cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been detected there.
With Nigeria’s historic achievement, polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. That means transmission of the virus has never been stopped there.
Nigeria was the last country in Africa where polio was endemic. The continent celebrated its own first full year without the disease on 11 August. Once...
Celebrate our remarkable progress toward a polio-free world with the Rotary World Polio Day event, streamed live from New York City on 23 October.
Co-hosted by UNICEF, the event will highlight recent milestones: In July, Nigeria marked one year without a case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus, and in August, the entire African continent celebrated one year without a case. Jeffrey Kluger, health and science editor at Time magazine, will serve as moderator, joining other health experts, including UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake and polio ambassadors.
The event, which drew 23,000...
People and nations worldwide will observe the International Day of Peace on 21 September, the date designated by the United Nations in 2001 “to be observed as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.”
That commitment to peace is directly linked to goals pursued by Rotary members since The Rotary Foundation’s mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace was proclaimed in 1917.
To fulfill that mission, Rotary conducts global forums, hosts international peace symposiums, continues its decades-long collaboration with the UN, and promotes initiatives such as the Rotarian Action...

As the world hurtles down the path of modernization, many cultures resist the speed of change. Korea embraces it, yet retains a balance many of us worry we’re losing. In Seoul, business-suited fathers patiently escort their children to school. Multigenerational families pause by ponds and brilliant bursts of wild azalea. Each day before dawn, Buddhist monks throughout the land sound fish- and cloud-shaped drums to wake all creatures, from sea to sky. It is a ritual thousands of years old, and in Korea, this rhythm of tradition infuses everything....

Welcome to our Club!
Service Above Self
We meet Tuesdays at 6:15 PM
Warrnambool Football Club
Cramer Street
Warrnambool,
Victoria 3280 Australia
Sergeant at Arms Andrea Sampson opened the meeting. The wedding saga continues with the big day inadvertently falling on another big day - the football Grand Final! Not only does the wedding fall on Grand Final day, but it is being held at the Wedderburn Football Club, the members of which now believe the wedding is a football function and think the invitation extends to everyone. Hopefully some will fall by the wayside as the venue, being in "Tittwobble Lane" may be difficult to find! Navman has moral standards to adhere to and does not have the street name recorded.
All the best Andrea and hopefully all the hard work and hiccups along the way will result in a wonderful wedding day for all.
President Steve Giddens welcomed everyone, including Lionel Ling (Karina's father), Jacob who is on school holidays from Portland and staying with Andrea, Roy Slater and Lois O'Meara. Club members were thanked for coming along showing their football colours.
Steve went on to recommend Wedderburn as the place to go this Saturday for the wedding of Andrea's daughter!
On behalf of Rotary Warrnambool East Steve thanked those who supported the art show on the weekend.
Opening of the New Fire Station
Steve advised that the new Warrnambool fire station should be opening before Christmas and it is the custom to march from the old station to the new one. This should be a big night. Steve also mentioned that he is hoping that Rotary could have one of our meetings at the new fire station to have a look around and get "takeaway".
New Year's Eve
Steve is looking into getting a meal and band going at Flagstaff Hill for a Rotary NYE celebration, possibly to include all Rotary clubs. Flagstaff Hill is a great venue from which to watch the fireworks. A show of hands indicated that this could be a goer!
Thanks also to those people who put the time and effort into making tonight's meeting such a success.
R.U.O.K.
Remember that it might be that just by asking if someone is OK , you pick up someone who isn't travelling so well.
Doug Maclean advised that the first roster has been sent out and the second will follow shortly. Please let Doug know if you have been left off the roster. For those on the roster, please note the different opening times for different gates.
Produce Table

End Polio Fundraiser Movie - 21 October
This is a joint Rotary project with all four Warrnambool clubs selling tickets to this movie fund raiser. The Gates Foundation will match every new dollar 2 for 1 that rotary commits to polio eradication, up to $35 million per year. Members are encouraged to support this worthy cause and see a great movie as well. See flyer below. Svet will have tickets for sale next week.
A bit about the movie - A Bridge of Spies
Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks reunite for a cold war spy thriller based on a true story. Hanks plays a New York lawyer tasked with negotiating the release of a VS pilot whose spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance and Alan Alda co-star. The screenplay, co-written by the Coen Brothers and Matt Charman, is adapted from a book about the 1960 incident in which Francis Gary Powers was captured after his plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Hat Day is an annual fund-raising project directed at supporting research into the maintenance of mental health and the prevention and treatment of mental illness. Australian Rotary Health began in 1981 when Ian Scott from the Rotary Club of Mornington, Victoria, proposed the establishment of a charitable fund, and to raise a minimum of $2 million for research into cot deaths. The funded research resulted in a massive reduction in cot deaths Australia wide. The scope of funded research subsequently expanded into four key areas, Mental Health, General Health, Indigenous Health Scholarships and Rural Medical and Nursing Scholarships.
Tuesday night’s activities and next week’s guest presentation focus on mental health.
In each year, approximately one in every five Australians will experience a mental illness.
Mental illnesses are the third leading cause of disability in Australia.
About 4% of people will experience a major depressive episode in a 12-month period.
Approximately 14 % of Australians will be affected by an anxiety disorder in any 12-month period.
About 3% of Australians are affected by psychotic illness; such as schizophrenia, where there is a loss of contact with reality during episodes of illness.
14 per cent of Australian children and adolescents aged 4-17 have mental health or behavioural problems.
12 per cent of 13-17 year olds report having thought about suicide, while 4.2% actually make a suicide attempt.
Girls have higher rates of suicidal thoughts than males. Teen boys are more likely to complete an act of suicide.
Even among young people with the most severe mental health problems, only 50% receive professional help. Parents report that help is too expensive or they didn’t know where to get it, and try to manage on their own.
Mental illness is not a life sentence. Most people will recover fully, especially if they receive help early. Some people may require ongoing treatment to manage their illness.
Some people have only one episode of mental illness and recover fully. For others, mental illness occurs only occasionally with years of wellness between episodes.
For a minority of those with a more severe illness, periods of acute illness may occur more regularly and, without medication and effective management, life becomes extremely problematic
Each year, Australian Rotary Health provides around $350,000-$400,000 to support a total of 15 new and continuing mental health research scholars. Our club contributes around $1,000 each year towards this work. Studies supported include many areas of mental health including new treatments for schizophrenia, the impacts of prenatal alcohol and drug exposure on infant brain development, treating depression among low vision adults, and testing dietary improvement as an effective treatment for mental health.
Next week club members will hear of the psychiatric services provided in our region by South West Health Care.
