THE ROTARY CLUB OF WARRNAMBOOL “FATHER OF THE YEAR” PROMOTION
The Rotary Club of Warrnambool continues to help better celebrate Father’s Day and recognize local fathers and father figures who are positive role models for their children and community, by again staging the “Father of the Year” promotion in Warrnambool and Moyne.
The promotion, now in its 14th year, will again be promoted throughout all Primary Schools in the Warrnambool and Moyne districts. Rotarians will distribute all details, including entry forms and will also make sure that it is promoted heavily throughout the schools. Notification of the promotion will go out to schools in early June asking for the project to be included in the schools’ program/curriculum during term 3.
The promotion will be divided into 3 age/year level groups: Prep to Grade 2 (approx 5-7 years old), Grade 3 to 4 (7-10) and Years 5 to 6 (10-12) with students asked to nominate their father/father figure and provide supportive drawings or words. Entries close early-August and judging will be completed soon after. And again we have decided to continue awarding a fourth category prize especially for entries for father figures, step fathers, carers and any other significant role models in a child’s life. And we are keen for the term “father figure” to be seen as inclusive of all gender types and will accept entries that nominate someone special of another gender for this category.
This year there will again be a greater emphasis on the importance of simply celebrating good fathering. This will include a greater recognition of the reasons behind the original inception of the promotion: Many studies show the value of good male role modelling on a child’s life. Children with involved, caring fathers have better educational outcomes. A number of studies suggest that fathers who are involved, nurturing, and playful with their infants have children with higher IQs, as well as better linguistic and cognitive capacities.
The winners in each of the 4 sections will be announced at special Awards Presentation Breakfast on Wednesday August 31st. We are also considering a repeat of last year’s very successful live stream “virtual” event that temporarily replaced our traditional breakfast due to covid restrictions. We are pleased to say that there will be interviews and presentations with the winning dads and their children, and we are hopeful that Denis Napthine and both Mayors will again also assist with presentations.
Members of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool will also help promote the event and will also be involved in the screening and preliminary judging of the many hundreds of entries that are anticipated. They will determine a short list of approximately 10 nominees in each section that will then be handed over to a “judging panel” of appropriate people to complete the difficult but heartwarming selection task.
