Background information

Cloverdale Community Centre is the base for inclusive learning and support programs and activities that build community capacity and resilience and promote community cultural expression.

These include the Shoulder to Shoulder program, that we recently learned about and sponsored, and the Lotus Kitchen which is the focus of our visit which:

  • Operates a kitchen that provides delicious Thai meals for the local community.
  • Provides support to survivors of domestic violence and slavery in Australia.
  • Builds relationships and links to local support services.

The program name, Lotus Kitchen, stands for “liberating ourselves together, united and strong”.

The name was chosen because of the significance of the lotus flower, it is a survivor because it pushes its way through muddy waters and finds the sunlight.
