This week our guest speakers were Zara Williamson, Bryanna Crabbe and Lara Taylor.
Defying the Drift was held at Longerenong College in Horsham from Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th September 2024. This program helps to encourage, motivate and enthuse young students to explore options, formulate goals and implement strategies that assist in developing career pathways for them in regional and rural Australia.
Day 1 started at 11.30am at the College with registrations, a tour of the college, welcome and introductions. There were 3 Sessions held on this day (Setting the Scene, Agriculture & Rural Communities and Public Speaking), with the last session taking place after the evening meal was finished at around 8pm.
Day 2 was Bus Tour Day.
It was an early start for the participants with breakfast at 6am. The first stop was at Rethus Broad Acre Farming (a family of engineers engaged in high-tech cropping) at 7.15am. Back on the bus and onto the second stop, Nuseed (Canola seed breeders) at 9am. The third stop was at Johnson's (a Hay exporter and pellet manufacturer business) at around 12 noon. Lunch was on the go on the bus while travelling to the next destination. The fourth stop was at Aminya Farms ORM Rural Management (a 3rd generation mixed cropping operation & with a 3500 head Merino flock as well) at 1.45pm.
Arrival back to the College at about 4pm saw the group having a session to review the visits undertaken.
The group finally finished day 2 after dinner at about 9pm.
Day 3 started with Breakfast at 7am followed by 4 more sessions (Practical public speaking, Agriculture as a career, Your next steps then a guest speaker) throughout the day finishing with lunch at 12.30pm and closing for the day at 1.30pm and all students leaving to head home.
