Club Business

  • Congratulations received from District Governor Lesley Shedden on our successful nomination to take part in the Rotary Pacific Fit for Purpose program. Click here for information on the program. Sue will be our club delegate and will attend the Workshop in Sydney on 12-13 October 2024. Our backup delegate will be Fiona Okeson. 
  • Our club was successful in obtaining a grant through RAWCS - Feminine Hygiene Program.
  • Share the Dignity - Lyn reported this is going really well and products will be distributed next week.
  • Say No to Family & Domestic Violence: Posters are being distributed around the town for display.
  • New banners "10 Reasons to join Rotary" have arrived. They will be stored in our Show Shed while not being displayed around the businesses in town.
  • Invoices for membership fees have been forwarded to all members for 2024/25 year.
  • Lyn, Beth, Amanda & her granddaughter attended Eat Up Sandwich Making on Monday 26th August. 311 sandwiches were made and ready to distribute.

South West Rotary Community Group (RCG) meeting. This was held on Sunday 25 August 2024 in Warrnambool. Maurie attended. Some of the topics discussed by the group were members, projects, ages within groups and activities.  The group will meet once a month with the next meeting being via zoom.
Colac P & A Society Meeting - Monday 19 August 2024
Paul Walsh attended. The following information was discussed at the meeting.
 
Here is a list of what's happening at the grounds for the rest of the year, as we are getting busier with bookings, so that groups can plan accordingly. 
 
Can groups also let me know if they have an activities planned for any dates just so I know not to take bookings or can display on website and socials.

Colac Growers & Makers Market 
First market date - Saturday 7th October 2024 10am - 2pm 
South end of the Hall of Commerce will be utilised for this event. 
Next market dates are:

Friday 11th to Sunday 13th October - Colac Orchid Show - South end of the HOC - set up Friday and event Sat and Sunday

Let's Talk Colac Walk the Walk Festival - 24 hour walk 
Camping on the arena and food vendors around the grass area of the arena with kids entertainment - event area from Lions Hut to Horse area and arena 
 
Thursday 17th October - Bike Education with Schools 
School Hours event - use of HOC for the whole day - Badminton please note no Thursday day time play on this date 
 
Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th October - Otway Harvest Trail Event 
HOC use for the two days to set up and hold event - plus Lions Hut to Horse area - if you would like to be involved in this event - Woodcrafters, Makers Space, Heritage Group please let me know as I can put in touch with the committee of this event

Colac Show - Saturday 2nd November 2024
Key Dates for areas: 
Caravan Park - Closed from 21st October - moving of vans to being from Wednesday 23rd and Showmans Guild arrive on site from Sunday 27th October for set up for show - reopens on Monday 11th November - TBC could be earlier 
HOC - Required for Show set up from Tuesday 29th October to Sunday 10th November 2024. 
 
Groups - please advise if you will be opening for the Show to trade so that I can add to the advertising posters that Colac Herald are putting together at the moment 
 
Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th November 
Camp Quality Market - HOC and grass area from the Lions and Rotary Huts - if you would like to be involved in this event - Woodcrafters, Makers Space, Heritage Group please let me know as I can put in touch with the committee of this event 
They will have kids activities in front of the office area and toilet blocks

Get involved in the latest upcoming events!
  • 28th August: BBQ Catering for Acciona Tree Planting day offering BBQ, Salads and Slices located near the playground at the Botanic Gardens. Please let Amanda know if you are available to attend.
  • 31st August: Bunnings BBQ.  Please get in touch with Amanda on 0447 650 826 if you can spare a few hours to support your local community. Still need helpers on both shifts. Roster attached.
  • 3rd September: Board Meeting
  • 10th September: District Governor Lesley Shedden visit - Indian Cuisine night. New member Beth Wilson will be initiated into the club.
  • 17th September: Footy Tipping competition winners will be announced at our Footy Fever Night.  Partners/Guests welcome. Please let Amanda know if attending.

  • 8th October: Guest speaker, Sara Stewart - Outbound Youth Exchange Student.
  • 12-13 October: Let's Talk Colac presents Walk the Walk Festival at the Colac Showgrounds.  This is a 24-hour team relay around the Showgrounds oval in support of Mental Health.  Looking for members to volunteer some time during this period. Click here for more information.   • 15th October: No meeting
  • 20th October: Otway Harvest Trail Festival. We will be catering at our Show Shed from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Roster attached. More volunteers are needed.
  • 22nd October: Defying the Drift participants to speak about their experience.
  • 29th October: Annual General Meeting.
  • 5 December: The Colac Leaders of Volunteers Network Volunteer Expo 2:00pm to 7:00pm at Copacc. This is an event for Not-for-Profit organisations, Volunteer-Involving Organisations and Community Groups. We will be having an informational stall at the Expo. Please let Amanda know if able to assist.

Guest Speaker Spotlight
Before Michael began his talk with us, we were given the opportunity to have a look into one of his taxis. The taxi had a ramp at the rear for wheelchair access and the first seat inside the back of the cab was able to be electronically moved to the outside of the taxi to enable easy access.
 
Michael also set up a display of the many varied radios and fare meters that have been used over the years. He also showed us the online system for running the cabs on a daily basis which shows where the cabs are, if they have a current fare and even what speed the cab is driving.
 
Michael and his family have operated Colac Taxis for approximately 44 years and have twice been awarded a business award by the Chamber of Commerce.  Colac Taxis now have 10 cabs and an airport shuttle service.  The fleet of cabs is varied and caters for a diverse range of customers.
 
Michael spoke about the deregulation of the industry and what happened through the Covid period.  Regulations were actually increased.
Compensation was offered as follows: 1st Taxi - $100,000, 2nd Taxi - $50,000 and the 3rd Taxi - $25,000 and nothing for any further taxis owned.
 
Taxi licenses are no longer saleable.  Owners could increase their fleet at a cost of $45k per vehicle per annum.
 
Michael had a meeting some time ago with the then Transport Minister, Terry Mulder and the following innovations were introduced:
  • The make and model of vehicles was expanded to ensure cabs were fit for purpose.
  • Fares and who could set them which had not been increased for 7 years were reviewed.
  • Country taxi owners could now set their own fares using the different formula of a larger "Flag fall" and a lower "kilometer rate".
The 1300 phone number for taxis was owned by the Chinese and they shut it down without notice. Other outside operators tried to move into the Colac market but the Colac Community supported Colac Taxis.  Uniforms and cab colors have changed over the years and have been updated to purple for clothing and white for cabs.

Roster for 10 and 17 September
For apologies and guest, Amanda is required to email the
Colac Central Hotel by 1pm Sunday with the number of meals required for the Tuesday meeting.
 
There is then a follow-up email 12pm Tuesday, if the number has changed. Please keep this in mind if you are going to be apology or plan on bringing a guest. If bringing a guest, let Amanda know if they have any dietary requirements.
 
Also, if you are rostered on to perform a role during the meeting please find a replacement prior to lodging your apology.
