LAST MEETING:Guest Speaker Phillip Chaseling

Prior to Monday night’s meeting our Club Admin Chris Lang was looking high and low for a great Guest Speaker. He need not have worried as we had a more than capable speaker right here in our Club

Phil Chaseling gave us an insight into both his personal and Rotary life. Greeting us with a north shore version of Jeff Fenech “I do Love You All”. Phil headed right back to his Great, Great Grand Father Mathew Everingham arriving on the First Fleet. Followed on the Second Fleet by Elizabeth Ryan who was to become his Great, Great Grandmother. After a few farming endeavors they set up the Family farm in the Hawkesbury.

Phil did his early schooling along with Barry Rothwell at Rhodes in Sydney, both becoming “Rhodes Scholars”

Up on the Hawkesbury, Phil entered into a traineeship with the Dept. of Ag and then in 1971 he married “The Love of His Life” Annette and in 1972 he returned to the Hawkesbury College to do his Post Graduate course.

Phil has been for a long time involved in all facets of breeding and finishing Poultry, Pheasants and Rabbits, Including his own Rabbit Abattoir. Up at the family acreage on Forrest Road, Phil decided to get involved in some subdivision work. That went amazingly well with the Tamworth Council taking only 11 short years to approve the plans!

Rotary entered Phils very busy life in 1980 at the urging of both Col Quast snr and Lyndsay Bull, back when the Tamworth Club had about 85 Members. Phil eventually joined Tamworth West becoming President in 02-03 and awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1997. Over the years Phil has traveled overseas to the Solomon Islands, Nepal and Vanuatu and more with other Members of Tamworth West doing the good works of Rotary.

The Chaseling Children, Tim, Wendy and Dimity have all been involved in various Rotary programs throughout their lives. One of Phil’s great memories was a Rotary Friendship tour to America with Annette, the yanks couldn’t do enough for them, including showing them the Hand Guns they were carrying.

Back in Australia Phil has had his fair share of sailing adventures including one short trip with Alan Bell that took five weeks. Annette was thrilled to bits with that one. Crewing on the exact replica of the Endeavor was also another great experience. Tracing Cook’s navigation logs and having a whale of a time.

Another great adventure was the caretaking roll that both Phil and Annette undertook on Deal Island, only three months, in the middle of winter, in the middle of Bass Strait and loved every minute of it.

From the Members, thank you Phil for a very interesting summary of your life so far.

Thanks to Brian Cox for the notes.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  The first meeting back for 2026 was very well attended.

We had a short background and a moment of silence for Peter George by Jim Hombsch and Peter’s Funeral Notice will be in the bulletin this week.

General Business

·    We have been contacted by Ken from Tamworth Sporting Car Club again wanting us to man the gate on the 14 February from 8:30am to 4:00pm with $700.00 donation or 10% of the gate takings which ever is higher. We will be adding a roster for this event for Club Runner, I assume we would have two teams of 3-4 guys, please check it out.

·    The Regional Fire Fighting Championships are coming up on Sunday 8 March, we are supplying 120 meals at $15.00/ head. This will involve setting up on Saturday afternoon 7 March, as they will have security overnight and then arrive on Sunday morning 6:30am – 10:00am, a single shift of at least 6 guys from 6:00am and see Club Runner for the roster.

·    In the next several weeks we will have our own James Hindmarsh do a presentation into quite a detailed proposal, James has put to the board regarding trying to get new prospective members to the Club and keeping them. See the Bulletin for when this is coming up. We will also have some handouts and information for the membership.

·    Many of you will have received an email regarding RYPEN information night on Wednesday 11 February at 7:00pm via Zoom. The District is running two RYPEN camps this year for $440.00/ per participant. So please think about any persons your think may well be a good fit for this camp.

·    The barbeque at the Family Hotel over Country Music: the anticipated numbers did not eventuate unfortunately. In the end we made approximately $290.00 for the two nights, but a large amount of fellowship was had on both nights and made it worthwhile.

·    We have a board meeting next Wednesday 11 February which we will be discussing what can be done about our dilemmas with the barbeque trailer not being able to be registered due to weight restrictions and whether we modify the trailer or just piece out the barbeques. More information on the Boards decision will be forthcoming.

·    Graeme Mills will have RAWCS stickers available again at the door next week and please keep a note if you have paid cash or eftpos to keep the Treasurer happy.

Late last year the Queensland Volvo Car Club approached us to cater for an event they are having in Tamworth on Easter Sunday. We have received very little information as yet. Gavin Hombsch has been contacted and he is trying to get further information on numbers/ time and what type of food and the like, to see if this will be a viable thing for the Club and hopefully Gavin will have an update for this event next week.

Our Guest speaker tonight was our very own Phil Chaseling speaking about life and his job. Phil spoke at length about his extremely colourful and eventful life thus far. Quite frankly I am surprised he has fitted it all in. Phil was ably introduced by Brian Cox and thanked by Noel Bennett.  Noel also called for other members with equally interesting lives and jobs to put there hand up for our Guest Speaker spots, when things get a bit quiet.

Our Sergeant this week was Frank Henry and he presided over an interesting, if not slightly off the topic, fine session.

The winners of heads and tails this week was Brian Cox and Gavin Hombsch.

Next week our meeting will be 6:00pm for 6:30pm at the Family Hotel, our guest speaker will be Jim Humphries speaking about being a child in WW2 in England.

Cheers

Scott
