Meeting Notice for 16th February 2026

Family Hotel West Tamworth at 6:00 for 6:30pm

PROGRAMME: James Hindmarsh - Membership - Growing our Club

LAST MEETING: Our guest tonight was Jim Humphreys, a captivating speaker. Jim (95) grew up in East London, born in 1930, and his childhood was shaped by the Second World War. When the war began on 1 September 1939, he was living in Haringey in North London. Like many children considered at risk in the city, he and his brother were gathered with other local kids and evacuated out of London. Their first stop was Colne, a village near Cambridge, where they spent their first night before being placed with village families.

Within two weeks, Jim and his brother were moved again, this time to Huntingdonshire for about six months. They spent much of their time outdoors, especially near a huge walnut tree that became a favourite play spot. At this stage, air raids had not yet begun in London, so for many children the experience felt more like an adventure than an escape from danger.

Their next evacuation took them much farther away, to Wales, where they stayed for fourteen months. Jim lived with his Aunt Martha and Uncle Jack, a miner who spoke very little. The Welsh landscape became his playground—mountain slopes, a small river turned black from coal washing, and wide open spaces. It was in Wales that Jim’s religious beliefs began to take shape through Sunday School.

Back in London, the war brought full employment but also strict rationing of food and clothing. Families made do with what they had, and some foods—like rabbit and conger eel—were common because they were easy to find. Jim joined the Boy Scouts during the war and entered high school in 1942. He was the only scout in his troop to earn the King’s Scout badge twice, and the discipline and service of scouting became an important part of his life. One of their major wartime tasks was collecting and recycling cardboard.

Air raids on London were at their worst in 1940–41, but by D‑Day on 6 June 1944, the raids had largely stopped. Jim later migrated to Australia in 1953 and eventually became an Anglican minister.

Thanks to James Hindmarsh for the notes
