Meeting Notice for 19th October 2026

The Family Hotel at 6:00 for 6:30pm

PROGRAMME: Mark O’Connor- AMPS Agribusiness

Last meeting

Bernice Simpkins, President of Toastmasters Tamworth, and Marlene Tremaine, Vice President Education, addressed the Rotary Club of Tamworth West  about how Toastmasters builds confidence and practical communication skills. Both have been members since 2005, with Toastmasters Tamworth meeting on the second and fourth Monday of each month and preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Bernice described joining roughly 20 years ago to strengthen her delivery while working in community services, emphasising Toastmasters’ supportive structure: speeches typically run five to seven minutes, impromptu “table topics” last two to three minutes, and strict timing lights and a buzzer help members become concise. She outlined a simple speech framework—clear opening and closing with three main points—that improves clarity for professional talks and social occasions such as wedding speeches. Marlene explained meeting roles, including the grammarian, evaluators for every speaker, and the executive team. She highlighted the benefits of regular practice, feedback, and the short Speechcraft course (four to five weeks) as a gateway for newcomers. The Tamworth club has about 20 members; dues are approximately $110 per six months, converted from USD. On AI, they noted it can assist with ideas and grammar, but impactful speeches must come “from the heart.” Members and guests are welcome to visit; pamphlets were offered for sharing with family and friends. Bernice recently won the International Speech Contest at the area level, underscoring the club’s active engagement and success.

Thanks to Pete Dillon for the notes.

PRESIDENT’S  REPORT

Back in the President Chair tonight after Gavin's successful first quarter was a bit like riding a bike.  I was a bit wobbly but generally pedalling in a straight line. (I might just need to update my run sheet to toast the correct monarch though LOL).

It was great to be able to welcome Berniece Simpkins and Marlene Tremaine from Tamworth Toastmasters to talk our members tonight about Toastmasters.  Explaining how at Toastmasters they help to guide members through writing,  building, and presenting public speaking presentations with confidence.  As a past Toastmaster, they accept members of all ages and I can attest that it is a great way to improve your public speaking and meet new people.

As discussed tonight the Quarterly Report for 1 July to 30 September 2026 is available for reading from the Bulletin Page on the Website. Thanks to everyone who volunteered with the Q1 activities.

Our Motor Show is fast approaching.  Chris Lang is calling for volunteers who want to be on the Motor Show committee.  The first meeting will be next Monday night 19 October after the normal Rotary Meeting at the Family Hotel.  I would encourage anyone who is interested to come along and help with making our next Motor Show memorable.

We now have our numbers locked down for Brighter Day catering for Youth Insearch at Bicentennial Park on 24 October later this month.  Thanks to those members who have volunteered to assist with helping Youth Insearch with this event.

We will have a BBQ ready for this event courtesy primarily of Richard Chaffey, Gavin Hombsch, Gordon Austin and Ron Carr who have been using their practical expertise in the workshop to rebuild our BBQ into a revised set up.  At our board meeting this week we will be looking at coming up with a more permanent long term solution.

Our Christmas Party has been locked in at the Family Hotel for Monday 14 December 2026.  This will be for members and partners and will be an alternate drop main and desert. We have confirmed that the cost will be $40 per head for this night and we will require to have reasonably firm numbers by no later than 7 December for this event.  Please save the date.

As Gav advised, for the End Polio Now Movie Fundraiser Guided by Horses, viewing is Thursday 22 October at 7:30 pm @ Forum Six Cinema in Tamworth. Ticket costs are $20 per person with a portion of the ticket price going directly toward End Polio Now. If you are wishing to attend please RSVP to Naomi Blakey on 0424 973714 on or before 16 October 2026.

Finally thanks to Ron Carr for providing an update on Bob Donoghoe.  Sounds as though Bob could be in hospital for a little while yet so if you have a chance I am sure he would appreciate visitors.

That’s it for me for this week.
