GUEST SPEAKER - PAUL SULLIVAN - MICRO BANKING:

On Monday night we welcomed Paul Sullivan back to speak about Micro Banking in Papua New Guinea. Goal being to raise money and lend out to small businesses in the region.
Paul presented recently to our members on the volunteer work he has been providing at Kip Village in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The average family in village earns $1-200 pa.
Paul has been involved with a financing development business known as Microlend Australia. Microlend Australia assist the poor and impoverished by financing business ideas to assist in the economic development of PNG villages. Microlend fund the initial costs of the business proposal which is repaid once the proceeds of the business profits come to fruition.
Many different business ideas have been funded so far including chickens, candle making, a school, clothing, bakery, piggery, coffin makers etc. Microlend Australia is helping people in 11 countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific and is a charity based initiative designed to help the community trade their way out of poverty.
As part of the finance process the local applicants are taught the basic principles of a business and that the value of the business is most important. Additionally that wages to the proprietors need to be part of the expenses and that the actual profit is owned by the business.
Lending is weighted by size and repayment ability. Concept being to try and help as many people as possible. At present Microlend Australia have provided 36 loans total $82,700 with an average loan size of around $2000. So far only 2 loans out of the 36 have defaulted which is very encouraging.
We thank Paul for coming and sharing some more of the wonderful initiatives he is involved with in PNG to assist reduce the level of poverty in the region.

PRESIDENT’S  REPORT :  Another busy week this week.

Our guests this week were Paul Hombsch, Jims appointed chauffer while Gavin is away, Ron McDonald Tony Summers neighbour and well known stock carrier and Bede Bourke brought along Mark Coulton the former National Party Member for Parkes who has recently moved to town to be closer to the family. As well as our Guest speaker Paul Sullivan all of whom were welcomed by Bede Bourke .

Gordon Austin spoke in regard to the Fire Fighting Championships barbeque which we came out with a profit of $1392.45, Gordon particularly thanked Rosemary for her help.

James Hindmarsh also spoke about his son Aiden's first Muay Thai fight which he won without too much damage.

General Business –

  • Jemma asked whether any of our members had any experience with running two up and being a banker for two up and Phil Lyon was going to ask some questions about that and get back to the Club.
  • The Mens Health Education rural van fund raising event at Bunnings has been slated for September this year and we are currently finding out who we need to approach at the Tamworth Bunnings to book a slot or two for fundraising.
  • Rotary Foundation has a member charity Will week running from 16th – 30th March and we are hoping for more information to be forthcoming, which will be in the bulletin as soon as possible.
  • The 29th March the District has a “special general meeting” regarding some minor changes to the constitution and bylaws and from my reading they are basically house keeping and clarification changes, if anybody else is interested in the full list of changes let me know and I will email you out the appropriate information.

Our guest speaker Paul Sullivan spoke about micro banking in PNG was quite interesting, especially in regard to the social challenges in PNG in regard to repayment of loans and general social interaction and we are looking at liaising with Calala Rotary in regard to funding and purchase of reading glasses for Paul to take New Guinea, we will have information forthcoming about this.

Our guest was ably thanked by Jim Booth who also proposed the Clubs thanks not just to Rosemary Austin for her work on the Fire Fighting Championships barbeque but also Gordon and Ron without their help this event would not have been anywhere as successful as it was. Thank you again to Gordon, Ron for your hard work

Our Seargent this week was Brian Cox who presented quite an entertaining fine session which seemed to concentrate on Bede Bourke and the head table.

Heads and tails this week was won by our guest speaker Paul Sullivan and Mal MacPherson.

Our meeting next week is back at the Family Hotel, please read your roster for work assignments and our speaker next week is Mark Coulton former Member for Parkes.

Cheers, Scott

This last weekend Tamworth hosted the Regional Firefighter Championships and Rotary Club of Tamworth West were undertaking the catering for the breakfast on Sunday morning feeding all the firefighting crews participating in the event.
We did have some leftover food from the morning which was donated to Billabong Clubhouse. A big thanks goes to Bede Burke who donated all the eggs used for the event.
