Our local poultry specialists Col Quast and Bede Burke were called upon to give their thoughts on the recent discovery of H5N1 bird flu in Western Australia and what the consequences will be for us in the East. Federal and State authorities have been preparing for this for sometime.
Our guest speaker wasLauren Sharkey (Mal Macpherson’s granddaughter) from Calrossy who presented on the current world conflict in Iran, and the concept of fairness from the perspective of citizens living in and displaced by, this conflict.
She was recently runner up in Round 1 of Rotary Public Speaking competition at Tamworth First Light Rotary and will be contesting future rounds to see if she can progress further in the public speaking across the district.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Our first meeting for the year was well attended and we were joined by Lauren and Kristine Sharkey and Mark Coulton. Lauren delivered a well polished edition of her speech with reference to the Rotary 4 way test. We wish her well in next round of the public speaking competition which will have the final in November as part of the Rotary Showcase to be held here in Tamworth. There are several events coming up over the next six months, requiring selection of candidates, including RYPEN, Youth Exchange, NYSF and RYLA. If you know of any suitable candidates please offer them the opportunity to apply as the respective selection processes commence.
We have several members with concerning health issues at present, so I would ask anyone who has time to reach out to them and offer assistance, as Don Eather may need a driver and Phil Chaseling needs some assistance with his bees. Updates on their progress will be available at each meeting.
As the new Rotary year commences, so does the thorny issue of members fees. As we haven't had a fee increase for several years, there is a need to revise the current contribution to properly cover the cost of RI and District membership and the support it offers to all clubs. With the current exchange rate in mind the Board has decided that fees for this year will need to be $270. A significant increase on last year I know, but is a direct result of not increasing fees each year. I would like you all to consider your membership and if you would like to talk through options, please contact Kevin Craggs or myself this week. Final numbers regarding our membership need to be firm by the end of this month as RI will be issuing a club invoice based on numbers as of 01/07/2026. We have a couple of events coming up, one at Oakburn Park and potentially a catering job for the RSL, but more on that at the next meeting.
Have great week.
