PROGRAMME: Dale McDonald and Corrie Morris - Men's Circle -

Promoting Healthy Masculinity

Last Meeting:

Sally-Anne Whitten - Cancer Council

Our guest speaker tonight was Sally-Anne Whitten from the Cancer Council.  Sally-Anne commenced in March this year in the role of Community Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Tamworth and surrounding region. In this role she specialises in being out and about talking to the community and raising awareness of cancer and organising fundraising events. Some of these events include:

. Stars of Tamworth Dance for Cancer held on 13 September at the TRECC and which has so far raised over 170,000 for Cancer research in the region this year,

.  Australia's biggest morning teas held May and June annually; and

. Daffodil Day run annually in August.

Sally-Anne explained the Cancer Council also sponsors accommodation for those travelling to Tamworth to visit the Northwest Cancer Centre courtesy of a partnership with Inala House. This provides then free accommodation for those who need help funded by Cancer Council.

Other services provided include:

. Transport to treatment with Volunteer Drivers providing free transport to those who can't afford or access public  transport. (currently 3 vehicles with 8 volunteer drivers in Tamworth;

. Dedicated support line 131120 which those affected by Cancer can phone and talk to a health professional about cancer, caring for those with cancer and cancer prevention;

. Cancer screening and sun smart programs; and

. Legal and Workplace support for both employees with cancer and employers.

Sally-Anne explained that the Cancer Council is Australia's leading cancer centre and is 96% community funded with every $1.00 raised in the area returning $1.15 in funding received.  Sally-Anne finds the transparency of organisation admirable being able to easily account for the distribution of funds raised.

Statistics indicate 1 in 2 people in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 85. The survival rate is, however, improving and the Cancer  Council have developed a survivorship care centre to help survivors look after their emotional and physical wellbeing once their treatment is complete. They are very passionate about attacking cancer from all angles.

It was wonderful to be able to host Sally-Anne tonight and the number of questions was tribute to the quality of her address.

PRESIDENTS REPORT: Tonight’s meeting was our biggest for this Rotary year and that was with at least 3-4 members being absent. Hopefully we can improve on these numbers in the future.

In regard to general business-

• Next week being Melbourne Cup week, we will have Melbourne Cup Sweeps apparently organised by Peter Smith and Jim Bannigan and possibly Phil Lyne. So bring your cash for the sweeps
• Tamworth Sporting Car Club appears we are looking at approximately $850.00 for the weekend, the numbers were not quite what they expected but still quite a reasonable outcome.
• Calala Rotary is opening the basketball court on Sunday 2nd November at 10:00am. Two members of the club are attending but if any other members wish to attend please do so.
• We have had a request for Christmas gift wrappers for Centrepoint Arcade. That request will be in the bulletin this week and please let us know if anyone would like to volunteer.
• The Polio Plus movie The Travellers last Friday night was attended by myself, Secretary Pete, Chris and Michelle Lang and Kevin and Lyn Craggs. It was quite a good movie enjoyed by all.
• Quirindi Rotary Club has also sent information regarding their Christmas Sounds of Season outing on the 29th November. This will be in the bulletin as well, and has information on tickets and the like.
• As far as Board related issues,we are not having a meeting on the 22nd December due to its proximity to Christmas and we have the Auto Barn BBQ on the 20th December.
• We are having the AGM at our Monday night meeting on the 8th December.

Our guest speaker tonight was Sally-Anne Whitten from the Cancer Council and local country music singer. Sally Anne was introduced by James Hindmarsh who did arrive quite late so the job of chaperoning Sally Anne through most of the meeting fell to David McDonald who did a great job stepping in. Sally Anne was ably thanked by Ross Constable to which Sally Anne’s subject of Cancer unfortunately has struck quite a chord within his family.

Our Sergeant this week was Phil Lyne and Phil presented quite an imaginative and reality defying fine session. Phil also discussed the new parking meters in the CBD, which no longer allow for cash payments and Tony Summers added a lot of the parking zones have changed which appears to be catching some people, so watch the signs as well as the meters.

Heads and tails this week was won by Peter Smith (who donated his honey to Sally Anne) and Jim Banningan.

Our meeting next week 13th November is back at the Family Hotel 6:00pm for 6:30pm our guest speakers are Dale McDonald and Corrie Morris from Mens Circle speaking about healthy masculinity.

Cheers
Scott
