PROGRAMME: James Hindmarsh - ClubRunner

Flashback to 13 October 2014 - Can you pick the vocational visit?

LAST MEETING: Exercise as Medicine: A Path to Better Health.

Our club welcomed Steve Riley, an Exercise Physiologist from Rural Fit, who delivered an insightful presentation on the crucial role of targeted exercise in managing chronic conditions and improving quality of life. Steve explained that exercise physiology is the clinical application of exercise to prevent and treat health issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal problems affecting backs, knees, and hips.

Unlike physiotherapy, which focuses on acute injury diagnosis and manual treatment, exercise physiology uses structured exercise as the primary intervention to enhance function, health, and mobility over the long term.

Steve highlighted several key health concerns for men over 55, noting that conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers are often linked by common risk factors such as high blood pressure and obesity. He shared that one in eight men will experience prostate cancer and that 75% of suicides are men, underscoring the importance of both physical and mental health checks. A powerful takeaway was his analogy of the body to a car, we should address the "warning lights" like high blood pressure or joint pain early, as prevention is always better than cure. He recommended aiming for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, supplemented with two days of strength training and regular balance exercises, to combat age-related muscle loss and reduce the risk of falls.

Thanks to Pete Dillon for the notes.

PRESIDENTS REPORT: Another well attended evening, with news from Ron Carr that Gordon Austin is doing better and longer term the family is hoping to be able to get Gordon home and care for him.  But will wait and see how the next couple of weeks go.

General Business

· The Family Hotel – after some discussion we are looking at manning the barbeque on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th January 2026. Both nights have live music at the venue. We will be using the Family Pub’s barbeque. We have to supply the meat, onion, bread, sauces, cooking and serving utensils for the steak and onion sandwiches/ sausage and onion sandwiches. Any meat not used on the nights, Gemma has noted she is happy to buy the meat off the club and can be used on subsequent nights. Rotary pay for the food and retain all profits. At this stage we are looking at a roster for both nights being a shift from 9:30pm – 11:30pm and 11:30pm – 2:00am.

· The Tamworth High School and Ron Young Award: - we are still investigating what is going on with the award, we may be able to reinstate it. We will have news in the following weeks.

· 2026 RYLA Camp Dates have been announced and are 16th – 23rd May 2026 at Glassy Head NSW. NOTE :- the Club does have some pre-paid funds for RYLA camps. These camps are aimed at 19-27 year olds.

· 2026 RYPEN North dates have been announced and is on 6th – 8th June 2026 at Bonny Hills and we are predominately looking at 13- 17 year olds.

(It is my understanding the information was sent to all Members about both camps, any members that have a possible candidates for either camp, please let me know).

Our guest speaker was Steve Reilly from Rural Fit and presented a thorough and informative talk on health and exercise and things we need to keep an eye on, Steve was introduced by Jim Booth and thanked by Ian Bath.

Our Sergeant tonight was Allan Guan who came up with some imaginative fines and again we seem to be talking about Schrodinger’s Cat.

Heads and Tails was ran by Chris Lang this evening as the Sergeant had to leave early. Somehow Chris managed to throw no winners in the first round, so our speaker Steve Reilly got the honey. The second round was won by Ron Carr.

Please check the roster for jobs for the next meeting which is 6:00 – 6:30pm at The Family Hotel and our guest speaker is our very own James Hindmarsh on the new Club Runner platform.

Cheers

Scott
