Lewis Chapman

Lewis S. Chapman presided as President of the Derby‐Shelton Rotary Club for Rotary year 1938‐1939.   He was born, April 11, 1869, at South Glastonbury, the son of Daniel F. and Sophia Lutz Chapman.  On  July 11, 1892, he married Eva Hodge of Danbury.   Lewis came to Derby to live in 1892 and in 1895 entered the employ of Allis & Company located 231  Main Street in Derby, the very successful store handling only the highest quality in men’s clothing and  merchandise. 

He was one of the incorporators when the business was formally incorporated in 1913  under the leadership of the original founder, Terence S. Allis and his son, Clarence H. Allis.  Upon the  deaths of the Allis men, Lewis became president and treasurer of the concern in 1931.  He was a commander of the Department of Connecticut, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and  president of the Derby Business Men’s Association.  Louis S. Chapman died in Minneapolis, Minnesota  on December 5, 1964 at the age of 95.
