George Tierney

George Herbert Tierney, Sr. was Postmaster in Shelton during his presidency of the DerbyShelton Rotary Club in year 1969-1970. Mr. Tierney was born in Shelton January 16, 1918, son of William N. and Loretta Dean Tierney. He was married to Florence Ryan Tierney of Shelton. A proud Shelton native, he was a graduate of Shelton High where he was president of the Class of 1935. Years later he was also the president of the Shelton High School Father’s Club. He was a member of the Catholic Men's club of St. Joseph's church, an executive board member of the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the lay board of St. Joseph's church. He was also a member of the advisory board of the Ansonia Savings Bank, of the K. of C. Bernardo Council, of the Postmasters Association, and the Griffin Hospital Corporation. 

He also was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War Il in 1943-1945. When a tragic accident took the life of his Marine son George, the family erected the Tierney Lodge at the Boy Scout Camp in Goshen in his honor with support of the Club. George H. Tierney, postmaster since 1971, avid supporter of the Boy Scout Council, and model Rotarian passed away in Derby on August 26, 1977 at the age of 59. In his honor, the Club presents the George H. Tierney Scholarship to a Shelton High School graduate.
