David Schepero

David Schepero was President of the Derby-Shelton Rotary club for Rotary year 1945-1946. He was the owner of Schpero Jewelry Store at 23 Elizabeth Street in Derby. In Derby, Schpero’s Jewelers was the the preeminent jeweler in the Valley from the 1930s to the 1980s. He was born in Ansonia on July 29, 1896 the son of Ozer (Oscar) and Millie Goldberg Schpero. He was married to Pessia (Pauline) Akabas. His family was very involved in retail jewelry business in the area. His brother. Lewis Schpero owned Lewis Jewelers in Ansonia. 

His son Arthur, formerly an optometrist in Derby, assumed the management of the Derby store upon his father’s death. David’s other son, Morton, moved to Orange and opened Schero Jewelers store on the green in Milford. David’s grandson became a veterinarian and at the time of this writing, conducts his business on New Haven Avenue in Derby. He was active in the community serving as an officer of Congregation Sons of Israel, officer of The Derby Business Men’s Association and as a member of the Board of Education for Derby schools. David Schpero, astute businessman, community activist and Rotarian died in Derby at the age of 59 on May 1, 1956.
