Divine Hand Orphanage update 2020
January 2020
Helping support the orphanage in difficult times

2019 was a difficult year in Haiti.

In July 2018, following the government’s announcement that it would eliminate subsidies, allowing fuel prices to increase by up to 50 percent, led to widespread protests and the worst civil unrest the country has seen in years.  Political instability continued throughout 2019, hindering the Haitian government’s ability to meet the basic needs of its people, resolve long-standing human rights problems, or address humanitarian crises.

Rotary representatives had planned to visit the orphanage in Feburary 2019, but due to the unrest, deemed it too unsafe. Fortunately due to Rotary's help two year ago, the Divine Hand Orphanage had moved to a rental property on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. This location is for the most part, outside of the main unrest.

The Rotary Club of Westshore continues to support the orphanage as we can. In May 2019, funds were provided to cover some medical expenses for the children and to assist with the rental costs of the orphanage. In Dec 2019, Rotary and other supporters sent over $600 US to the orphanage to provide the children with gifts and a healthy Christmas dinner.

Rotary plans to continue to support the Divine Hand Orphanage for 2020. The political unrest within the country makes it more challenging for Doris and the children to reach their goal of being self-sufficient. It is only with your help that they can continue to work towards that goal.

We ask that you support the children for 2020 as we work toward making the orphanage more sustainable.

If you would like more information on how to help Doris and the orphans, contact Rotarian Bob Beckett at or call him at 250-818-2791.
