Jared Hendry is a twenty-three year old Comox Valley resident who is a humanitarian in every sense of the word.  Hendry graduated from UVic in 2012 and began training at BCIT to become a sonographer in the fall of 2012.  While he was at UVic he became aware of the living conditions of the 5,000 residents of Smoky Mountain, a community in a garbage dump in metro Manila.  He decided to do something for the children of that community and began collecting hundreds of soccer, rugby and basketballs, sports uniforms and shoes and put them all in a forty-foot container, raised $5,000 and shipped it to Manila.  The equipment has been distributed to the children and has changed their lives.  In the spring of 2013, Hendry travelled to the Philippines and spent five weeks visiting Smoky Mountain and several hospitals in the area.  In honour of his service and dedication to others, the Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial has named Jared Hendry a Paul Harris Fellow by donating $1000 in his name to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and at the regular meeting of the club on 20 August, he was presented with a certificate and pin that identify him as a Paul Harris Fellow.
