Mia Bradfield - exchange student in Thailand!

Our special guest and speaker at our last meeting was Mia Bradfield. Mia was an exchange student to Thailand sponsored by the Courtenay Rotary Club. Mia spent one year in the south of Thailand and greeted us with a few words in Thai. She attended school with other Thai young people and was in full immersion in the Thai language and culture. She had four different host families over her year in Thailand.

She gave us a good look into the life of an exchange student in a foreign country and had a lovely photo presentation of her school and Rotary friends. She took Japanese class, Thai dance, Thai music & of course Thai language and art classes.

She advised us that speaking Thai is challenging as it is a “tonal” language. Mia was also able to go with one class on a school trip to Singapore and Malaysia. She introduced us to Thai food which was even more challenging to her because she left Canada as a vegetarian and had to practice eating meat before she left. There were 15 students in her district.

She was able to visit exotic locals like Cambodia with her exchange student group. We are grateful to Mia for allowing us this brief but interesting insight into her year as a Rotary Exchange Student. Thank you Mia!
