Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities

It was our pleasure to welcome Bert Herring owner of Courtenay Canadian Tire Store!

Bert spoke this morning about Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, a project launched to address an issue of national concern - the inactivity of children. National in scope, but local in its focus, Jumpstart helps children in financial need in organized sports and physical activities by assisting with the costs associated with registration, equipment and/or transportation.

Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) has been a part of communities large and small for more than 90 years.

Prior to Jumpstart Canadian Tire had a program called Foundation for Families providing a helping hand to families in need, to ensure that life’s basic needs were met: food, shelter, clothing and essential goods. The dealers felt very strongly that there should be program more focused on children and activities along with community partners.

Last year Jumpstart helped out 550 children with a maximum of $300 per child. The average was about $100/child. This year there will probably be about 700 children helped out.

The program is anonymous and a wonderful investment in the community and the child’s self-esteem.
The biggest fundraiser is a 24 hour “Spin-a-thon” at Comox Rec Center. All the monies raised in the Comox Valley stays in the Comox Valley. Canadian Tire also do a national fundraiser bike ride in different parts of the country.
