Announcements

*  Welcome to the ZOOM meeting of Minneapolis University Rotary Club.  We will have a club discussion in place of today's speaker who had to postpone to a later date.

* We will continue our regular weekly club meetings by ZOOM until we receive further guidance from the CDC, state and Rotary District regarding in-person meetings.

*  As a result of our club's 30th anniversary earlier this month, we raised over $1500 in donations for bunk beds at the boarding school in Uganda supported by the AfricaStrong program.  Thanks to all current and past club members for their donations!

*  A reminder to sign up for "The Origin and Evolution of Coffee" ZOOM program to be held March 13, 10-11 a.m.  This is a fund-raiser for REAL (Resources Enriching African Lives), which Tsehai Wodajo described at our Jan. 27 meeting.  Register at real-africa.org.

A Member Moment With....Carol Skulstad

Carol provided a lifetime of significant memories, including photos, starting with her childhood in Granite Falls, MN, where there were "lots of Scandinavians and a few Germans."  She attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, earning a degree in elementary education.   Volunteer work has been important to Carol, including a stint in Jersey City NJ, where she met Jean Westberg way back (!)  and working with the VISTA program in Nashville.  Both experiences broadened her experiences with a diversity of people and backgrounds.  Carol spent 29 years working for NW Bell, which became US West, which became Qwest.  She has been substitute teaching since her formal retirement, enjoying cooking and entertaining, and baby-sitting her nephew as much as possible.  Carol related the positive emotions between teacher and students she has been privileged to experience over the past years.

*John admitted he forgot the Feb. board meeting, but promised to make the March meeting!

*Bob recommended the film "The Sound of Metal" on Amazon Prime, as an excellent portrayal of a heavy-metal drummer dealing with hearing loss.

*Jean shared photos of her visit to a salt mine on the outskirts of San Felipe, Mexico, where she is spending the winter months.

*Jerry shared photos of the Santiago, Chile, audiology clinic rooms that await the equipment to be purchased with the recent Rotary grant that he and Bob have been working on.

*Carol S delivered the club foundation's second $400 donation to The Food Group offices and reports that Talia Miracle will be speaking at a later date to describe the work of the Minneapolis food banks receiving our support.

* Erin noted the 116th birthday of Rotary International and thanked club members for their support of AfricaStrong and its efforts to supply bunk beds at the elementary school in Uganda.

* Erik was happy to report the house in Galveston came through last week's storms without water damage.

CLUB Discussion

President Erik said the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning each club meeting has been raised as an issue.  Today's discussion today resulted in a consensus of feeling that we need a longer  conversation about this issue involving all members.

Since we do not have a speaker scheduled for next Wednesday's club meeting, it was decided that we will hold a Club Assembly March 3rd to discuss meeting structure, with special focus on the Pledge of Allegiance.  The meeting will be members only.

Watch your email for further information.  And join the meeting at noon by Zoom, prepared for a positive exchange of ideas.  We want our discussion to be a means to unity and understanding each others' perspectives.
