TODAY'S SPEAKER - Dr. Andrea, Westby, "Seeking Justice and Equity in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health"

Dr. Andrea Westby is a family medicine physician with the University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program.  Her passions include obstetrics, parent, child and family health, racial equity and reproductive justice.

In her presentation, Dr. Westby described how the Family Practice and Community Health program at the U is working to advance justice and equity in health care.  That commitment was strengthened with the creation of the Josie Robinson Johnson Endowed Chair in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) in October 2020.  Dr. Westby was named its inaugural chair holder.

Dr. Westby outlined the mission and goals of JEDI,
including its central role in training MN's primary health care workforce to be responsive to the growing diversity of the state's population--as Dr. Westby said, to provide "culturally humble" care beyond the walls of the clinic and into the communities around the state.

More information on the the JEDI program can be found at med.umn.edu/familymedicine/equity-diversity-inclusion.
