Oct. 11, 2023 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Mishka Vertin (she/her), Co-founder, Executive Director
When Mishka first proposed starting a little running group to the staff of Higher Ground Shelter in Minneapolis in 2014, she had no idea that so many runners of ALL types would want to be a part of it - or that it would grow to include hundreds of runners across the Twin Cities in just a few years. A licensed social worker, Mishka brings over a decade of nonprofit experience to Mile in My Shoes and has thoroughly enjoyed learning all that it takes to run a successful startup nonprofit. While her focus is now primarily on the growth of Mile in My Shoes - strategic planning, development and community partnerships - she still gains her motivation from the team runs, where those first miles, fierce hugs, and incredible bonds continue to inspire every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. |

Marcel's journey to starting Strive Staffing
Nov. 15, 2023 12:00 p.m.
I have had a lot of challenges in life, addiction and criminal thinking was a big part of it. I struggled for nearly two decades with some reprieve for 6 months to a couple years interspersed in this time. My final act was getting arrested and convicted of 1st degree sales and committed to the DOC for 58 months. I went in in January of 2016 and after 4 months I entered the Challenge Incarceration Program, CIP, and for the next 6 months I was in bootcamp where I was dedicated to change and began to acknowledge and correct my thinking. I graduated bootcamp in November of 2016 and was released from prison on intensive supervised release for the next year. During this year, 2017 I began working for Entourage Events Group as a banquet server and quickly made my way up through Captain and finally Banquet Manager where I had the responsibility of talent sourcing and acquisition. At this same time, I was attending school at Summit Academy to become an electrician, after 20 weeks of this I was hired and accepted into the electrical union. My life was unrecognizable from what it had been, and I was able to take my future in directions I had never imagined. I finally decided to have a conversation with my then pregnant Fiancé and tell her that I believe my staffing business is our future. She agreed so I had a conversation with my electrical boss and put in my notice. Part of the reason I was set on this decision was the purpose I found in it. Strive is a 2nd chance employer and my purpose is to open new opportunities for those with criminal records. I have made partnerships with multiple unions, which is the first in Minnesota. Strive provides union janitors to 4 of the major stadiums with plans to be in all 6 stadiums in the metro. We have established ourselves as one of the best choices for those “hard to hire” individuals and through this have tapped into an underserved demographic. Strives’ mission is to bring the “Work ready” employees that we connect with to industries struggling to find workers and be the responsible party for our temp-to-hire workers. Strive is now in its 5th year and I am in my 8th year in recovery. I have a purpose and the ability to follow it. I now have a beautiful wife and two young children,2 and 4. I do not wish to erase my past nor am I ashamed of it, it was an expensive education. Today my life is unrecognizable from what it was, but I have found that the skills I used in that life all seem to transfer, the hustle and ability to navigate social and political situations are at the top of these. Today I am a business Owner and Entrepreneur with purpose. |

An author, poet, singer-songwriter, and poverty abolitionist
Nov. 29, 2023 12:00 p.m.
Julia Dinsmore is an author, poet, singer-songwriter, and poverty abolitionist who is best-known for her poem, “My Name is Not Those People.” Julia uses creative voice and storytelling to talk about the one thing we too often ignore – class and poverty in America.
From church basements to the halls of congress, Julia has presented in her edu-performance style, calling those who listen to join the work of creating a just world for those experiencing poverty and marginalization. She is a teacher for students in high schools and ivy leagues. She has taught students at Stanford University, Brown, Duke Divinity, Swarthmore, and Amherst College, among others. She is most well known for her classes in neighborhood “porch sitting” which she calls an alternative to service-learning!
Julia is a mother and grandmother who lives in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and is deeply committed to her communities there. She has been a Community Faculty member with HECUA; Inequality In America (Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs) in St Paul for the past 30 years and has been part of shaping the creative community-based pedagogy of the institution.
Though functionally illiterate for most of her life, Julia taught herself how to write, while writing her first book, "My Name Is Child of God, Not Those People, A First Person Look at Poverty," (Augsburg Fortress). This book has become required reading in university classrooms and a favorite book of book clubs and reading groups.
Julia would love to come to your organization and facilitate an authentic conversation surrounding class discrepancies and building relationships across these seemingly impenetrable borders.

MN School Based Health Alliance
Dec. 13, 2023 12:00 p.m.
I am honored to serve as the first Executive Director of the MN School Based Health Alliance. Twenty-five years in community health, education innovation, and public policy has taught me to effectively lead student health initiatives that ensure access to meaningful healthcare and equitable education opportunities for kids to thrive. To create change for young people and communities, healthcare delivery needs to be dynamic and adaptive, recognizing that it is in our homes, schools, and communities that we heal. School-based care is responsive to communities, creates ease, cares for the whole person, and addresses the entire ecosystem in which children live. In my work and life, I endeavor to create space for dissent, dialogue, and discovery and live a life full of joy. |

Memorialize The Movement
Jan. 10, 2024
Memorialize the Movement (MTM) is a grassroots organization that was created in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department and the protests that followed on May 25th, 2020. MTM was born from the need to address the lack of racial and economic justice in the city of Minneapolis. When it became clear that there was no plan for the collection and preservation of the plywood murals made by 2020 protesters and mourners, MTM’s founder, Leesa Kelly, took on the responsibility of collecting as many of these artworks as possible so that the Black and Brown stories they told would not be lost. |
