Rotary Club President 2022-2023

Club President Royce Engstrom

Royce has been a member of the Rotary Club of Missoula for nearly fifteen years, joining the club after moving to Missoula in 2007. His career has been in higher education, serving approximately twenty years as a Chemistry faculty member and another twenty-plus years in various administrative roles. He has served at the University of South Dakota and at the University of Montana, where he was Provost, President, and faculty member. He has been a board member of several national-level higher education organizations, including the Council for Undergraduate Research, the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities. He is fortunate to have experienced higher education from so many different roles.

Royce and Mary have been married for 43 years. They have two children, Tyler, who is a Professor at the University of Northern Colorado, married to Ellie and father to Raina, and Carey, who is beginning work for the NCAA in Indianapolis, and who has two boys with her husband, Pete, named Austin and Grant. Nothing is more fun than getting the whole clan together!

Royce has had a life-long interest in wooden boats and has built a number of canoes, kayaks, and skiffs, and is currently working on a 17-foot sailboat, which may actually hit the water yet this summer. He is also interested in music, playing guitar, mandolin, and piano. Mary is an active silver-smith, making and selling jewelry.
He is honored to be selected as President of our Club and is grateful for the support of so many members who make such good things happen!

Our Sgt. Speaker From July 6

Don Lorenzen - Gray Lines Across Time

Don Lorenzen, was our speaker this past week.  Don discussed his Grandfather Marion Gray's Book, which he edited, completed & published after his grandfather's death.  He titled it Gray Lines Across Time. The Book is a coming-of-age story of his grandfather from 1916-1923.  The story began with his grandfather's late high school years and his first job at the Five & Dime store unpacking China dishes for the store.  He later enlisted in the US Army ahead of World War 1, he wanted to be involved in aviation, but the Army had other plans for him. He was in the 29th Division aka the Blue & Gray Division (pictured below), formed after the civil war as a union between the Union & Confederate Armies.  He brought some interesting items to share as well, some "Trench Art' carvings (also pictured below) into some of the large brass shell casings, that soldiers carved while in the trenches. Don also mentioned that he did not edit his grandfather's manuscript to make it more Politically Correct, but left the original language used by his grandfather in the book. After the war he married an older woman, who passed away in 1961 and he remarried his old girlfriend & Don did not get to see his grandfather again until he passed, due to a family feud, so he did not get to know about a lot of the interests that they shared.  Don gave the club 2 books, which we auctioned off, with the proceeds benefitting the Mother's Milk Bank of Montana.
5 Minute Vocational Talk - Lisa Tate

Lisa Tate's 5 Minute Talk

Lisa shared her interest in hang-gliding with us and said was so interested in it at one time, that she once moved to Boise at one point to pursue better hang-gliding opportunities.  Lisa went on to UC Davis and later Indiana University, receiving a MA in Non-profit management. She is currently the Executive Director of the National Museum of Forest Service History; they've raised about 14 million in capital for this museum. Lisa 's father Dennis Tate was also a member of our club many years ago.  She also told us about her interest in glass blowing, her website is www.lisatateglass.com, she invited us to check us out her website, her style of glass is called cameo glass, which is an ancient technique used during the Roman Empire, to plow glass & then cut through the layers of colored glass to reveal designs.

Letter from the President

A New Year

Greetings and welcome to another exciting year for the Rotary Club of Missoula! I will begin by giving a hearty THANK-YOU to all who have made last year such a good one for the club, noting especially the work of outgoing President Dean. We have had a good deal of energy in the club this past year as we moved to our new meeting location at the Country Club, contributed so much time and money to worthy causes around Missoula and beyond, and had great fun in the process.

Looking toward this next year, there are several aspects of Rotary that we can emphasize. First, we want to make sure all our members are actively engaged in the work and fun of our club. Everyone has busy lives, but let’s work to make Rotary a fulfilling and rewarding part of those busy lives. Next, we want to take more of a leadership role in the excellent work being done by our Rotary Coalition in Guatemala. Third, I would like for us to consider developing a novel and effective fund-raising adventure for our club, one that has ongoing visibility in the Missoula community. Finally, lets continue to grow the social and fun side of the club with even more events beyond the meetings.
I look forward to working with you and I appreciate all the contributions to our club that each of you make. Imagine what Rotary can do!

Thank You,

Royce Engstrom, Club President 2022-2023
