Teen Closet's mission statement reads: "Help boost the self esteem of teenagers in foster care, by providing fashionable clothing and accessories of their choice." This non-profit has been around for 10 years and continues to grow and provide for more and more children. Initially they provided for 50-60 kids a month in age from 12 - 20.
Recently they have been inviting in kids from the Hart Program. That's a federally funded program to bus homeless kids who are couch surfing in our county, to their high school. Yes, these kids are still attending high school despite their situations. In Spokane County there are between 2500-3000 homeless kids. Also recently, they joined forces with Clothing Perk a sister organization that provides clothes for younger children.
At this point, Tom says they are providing service to any child who comes in. They're allowed to come and shop the boutique in the spring and again in the fall. They are always looking for donations of socks and underwear. Many of these kids are removed from their home in a crisis situation and honestly have only the clothes that are on their back at the time. Teen Closet helps offset the foster parent's budget and improves self esteem in these children.
Our club is donating our surplus bike ride T shirts to Tom to distribute.
