Rob Allen with Joanne Fong of Whitworth social media team presented at our club the Fairwood Farmers Market. The vision statement says they want to revitalize and complete the Fairwood District in N Spokane with new shops, mixed use development, a sustainable farmers market and bicycle friendly trails. Rob said he wants this area to become a community meeting/market place.

Rob operates on a $50,000 annual budget with half of that coming from his vendors, grants and sponsors. One of the greatest sponsor is Allstate Insurance. They provide $5000 and sponsor "Good Hands Day" as a Tuesday volunteer point for the community. The market runs Tuesdays May - October from 3-7 pm with 30-40 vendor stalls. They average $15,000 income a week with $300,000 as an estimated economic impact for 2017.

This started off as an office party in the parking log for the businesses there. It has grown to 5 paid part time staff and last week they had 1200 visitors. There are some unique things happening here ... the market takes all kinds of currency ... WIC, EBT, credit/debit and cash. Rob received a $3500 grant for children's programming presenting KERNEL Kids Eating Right Nutrition and Exercise for Life. It's a youth oriented nutrition and physical activity program designed to engage children in learning about lifelong healthy eating habits, gardening and exercise. At the end of each activity, the kids get a $2 coupon to redeem for fruits and vegetables at the market.
