Bonners Ferry Rotary News for August 2012....

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS:  JoAnn and Don from Rotary in Western Washington/Vancouver were visiting on their vacation from Glacier National Park.

Joining us during the month of August were Jim Toepfer (Pat’s cousin), Jamie (Ron’s nephew/brother’s son from Wisconsin), and Linda Alt’s granddaughter, Savannah Alt.  Savannah volunteered at the BC Rotary Fair booth this month and also won blue ribbons for her lamb that was sold for a ‘record’ price.

ROTARY GRANTS TO THE COMMUNITY: ImageGrants were awarded to the following local non-profit organizations: (1) Senior Center to recover the center’s pool table (the weekly Rotary meeting on September 4th will be held at the Senior Center); (2) $50 to Helen Chase, Coordinator for advertising for a local presentation on ‘Human Trafficking’; (3) $400 to the Boundary County Fair Board for shade at the dining area; (4) $300 for purchase of raffle tickets for the late Rich Carlson fundraiser scheduled for September 15th at 6:00 pm.

Congratulations To:

Anya Krmpotich

Recipient of 2012 Rotary Scholarship

Anya Krmpotich, one of the 13 Rotary Scholarship recipients for 2012, was unavailable to receive her scholarship in person at the dessert social at the Kootenai River Inn in May. ImageShe is now spending the summer from her studies at Whitworth College in Spokane where she is majoring in Biology and Spanish and stopped by to thank Rotary for her award. One of the reasons Anya was selected, in addition to her scholastic achievement, was her work with community service organizations, including homeless shelters, hospitals, and public health departments.

RICH CARLSON FAMILY FUNDRAISER:  The Board in August approved the purchase of $300.00 in raffle tickets for the Rich Carlson Family Fundraiser (see above). The event is being held to help cover some of the expenses that the Carlson Family has incurred over the past year as they fought the good fight against cancer. Unfortunately Rich lost the fight two weeks ago. Even though scheduled on September 15th, the same day as the Kootenai River Ride, the event will begin later in the day from 6-9 pm.

Multiple raffles are being held as well as a silent auction. You can view the flyer concerning this fundraiser at Rich Carlson Fundraiser Flyer.pdf

ü    Jim P addressed the issue of club membership including orientation of new members that is being chaired by Wendy H., and the interest in corporate membership.  There are 4-5 companies/businesses that are interested in joining as corporate members including the banks in the community and a law firm.  Please contact Jim or Ron S if you have an interest.

ü    The 2012 SWISH tournament on July 14th & 15th was another success in our series of annual 3-on-3-basketball tournament fundraisers. The story about “SWISH” and videos of the 2011 and 2012 tournaments from “Boundary County Live” are posted in the center panel on the BFRC website.

ü    Linda A summarized the results of the annual Boundary County Fair Rotary booth for kids. Although the ‘bean bag sling-shot’ and ‘sand mine’ activities were extensively utilized, they were there to show Rotary’s support of the Fair and not as a fundraiser.  Image

However, the event did net $131.46.  In addition, $60.00 was generated toward the 2013 Raffle Calendars fundraiser and $275.00 for the Bike Raffle (plus $276.00 earlier). The bike will be presented at the Kootenai River Ride on 9/15.

ü    Bill M reported that the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will conduct classes for Rotary leadership and other Rotary participants at a place TBA in the Sandpoint/Coeur d’Alene area this fall. Image Part I, will provide an overview of Rotary programs, helping develop ideas that participants can bring back to their Clubs and will be offered on 10/27 and again on 12/8 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm with lunch. More information can be found on the District 5080 website

ü    President Greg again mentioned that the 5 Rotary Committees are still being formed. All members are expected to serve on at least one committee of their choosing this year or be assigned to one: Club Administration (Kirsten as Chair); Foundation (Jennifer J); Membership (Jim); Public Relations (Bill M); Service Projects (Linda A); & the newest committee, “New Generations”, in formation and responsible for all activities related to youth in the club from 12 years of age and older (i.e., Rotaract, Interact).

  • Norm referenced the August 2012 issue of The Rotarian, pointing out the section on  “Rotary Basics”.  Every August, Rotary publishes a section in The Rotarian outlining the Rotary motto, Rotary’s 5 avenues of service, and The Rotary Foundation, among other materials. This information is especially relevant to our newer members.
