February is designated as World Understanding Month. This month was chosen because it includes the birthday of Rotary International, February 23. During the month, Rotary clubs are urged to present programs, which promote international understanding and goodwill, as well as launch World Community Service projects in other parts of the world.

Coincidentally, the Rotary Club of Bonners Ferry was presented with an opportunity to launch a World Community Service project. Our club, together with six others from North Idaho is helping to support the purchase of surgical equipment for the Bangalore India Eye Hospital. With equal funding from a seventh and final Rotary club from the area, Rotary International will provide a matching grant of $50,000.  The newly formed Interact Club of Sandpoint was instrumental in the initial funding to support the project.

The Board met after the presentation by Jerri Anderson on February 7th (see narrative in the story of the Featured Speaker on February 7 in the newsletter) to vote to support the grant proposal. After notifying Jerri of our decision to commit to this International project, she made these comments to our District officers and to the Rotary Club of Bonners Ferry:

"TODAY IS A WONDERFUL DAY! The Bonners Ferry Rotary Club has joined us as PARTNER #6 in the Bangalore India Eye Hospital Rotary International Matching Grant!

"Rotary Area 5 is now the Fantastic Five! Our Rotary Clubs have banded together to embrace the vision of our District’s recently Chartered Sandpoint Interact Club. TOGETHER, we have accepted the opportunity to financially support the Rotary International Matching Grant presented to us by our District Governor Rampur Viswanath. We are leading by example, as we unite the youth of Interact with the strength of Rotary to positively impact the world.

"Thank you all."
