On a warm…and what started out to be a rainy Saturday morning…following an evening of fried chicken, potato salad and cole slaw for volunteer orientation, people made their way to the downtown area of the community to avail themselves of SWISH, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Held each year in downtown Bonners Ferry, SWISH is in its fifth year and always turns out to be one of Rotary’s major fundraisers.  In 2012, Linda McFaddan, Brion Poston and Ron Smith co-chaired the event ending up with an estimated 65 teams and 241 players, about 5 teams less than last year.  Over 100 players registered on-line.  Orientation for the monitors and scorekeepers was held on Friday evening, July 13th, hoops were put in place and Kootenai Street was cordoned off. The former South Hill Furniture Store served as SWISH headquarters.  About one-fifth of the 101 volunteers were Rotarians. A Rotary booth was available for bike and calendar raffle ticket sales and other incidentals including the mountain bike that will be taken away by the holder of the winning ticket at the Kootenai River Ride.  You can still register for the Bike Ride at:  http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3019480347

Ron Sukenik, 2011 SWISH Coordinator, described this year as a good experience for Rotary and the community and thanked the approximately 20 plus Rotarians who volunteered.  He also reported that this was the 5th year for the tournament and that backboard sponsorships were only guaranteed for the first 5 years. Consequently, sponsorships will need to be renewed beginning in 2013 that should enhance our revenue for additional community and international projects.
