The Rotary Club of Bonners Ferry has donated $2,500 to the Boundary County School District to meet the reading needs for elementary and middle school students at Valley View, Naples, Mount Hall and Boundary County Middle School.

All Rotary clubs share a key mission: to serve their community and those in need throughout the world.  Over the past several months, the Bonners Ferry Rotary Club has considered several viable literacy projects for our schools. In the latter part of November, Jan Bayer, Curriculum Director for the District, identified to us their greatest need -- an upgrade to their Accelerated Reader program (ARP) from a desktop version to a web-based version.

As Jan has described, Accelerated Reader is a program that allows students to read books at their appropriate level of difficulty and complete reading quizzes to determine the students' success. The program provides frequent progress monitoring for the students, teachers and parents. The students can complete quizzes from books they self select, and from reading practices, vocabulary practices and textbook readings through the school's current reading adoption. The Boundary County Library has also identified books that coincide with the ARP, so students have access to more books than may be housed at the schools.

The Board's approval of the $2,500 donation was conditioned upon the School District finding matching funds to complete the entire project.  We have been assured that the District will offset the remainder of the cost with Title I funds.

The motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self." When we serve others in our community with our donations of time and money, we feel good about ourselves. Service also inspires us to find creative and effective ways to provide additional services using the Club's five committees as a springboard -- club administration, rotary foundation, membership, public relations and community service.

The members of the Rotary Club of Bonners Ferry should be very proud of their accomplishments in serving our community.
