DISTRICT CONFERENCE HELD IN SPOKANE, JUNE 9-12

Clemens Witt who attended the Rotary International (RI) Convention last month in New Orleans, a Rotoactor from Germany and a RI Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar to Australia was quoted as saying, “No matter where you come from, your path to the convention is always full of surprises.”

The District Conference was also full of surprises. There are approximately 65 Rotary clubs in District 5080 confined to southeastern British Columbia, northern Idaho and eastern Washington. Once a year, RI Districts hold some type of conference to review the past year, motivate the listeners, and set the stage for the new Rotary year. At this year's conference, Club 21 100th Year the Spokane 21 Club celebrated its 100th anniversary, RI dignitaries gave some spirited and inspirational talks, the District Governor handed out a number of awards including these: (1) membership growth and retention; (2) unique and aggressive community service projects; and (3) Rotary Foundation goals (EREY -- every member contributes $100.00 each year).  Approximately 12 Presidential Citations were also awarded to clubs in the district where their activities were tested in four areas of service: Club, Vocational, Community, and International Service. The Bonners Ferry Rotary Club was awarded one of the Presidential Citations.  In addition, the 21-23 exchange students throughout the District -- including

The BF Rotary Club's donation of a watercolor painting sold for about 50% over its estimated value. The conference concluded with the "Passing of the Pins" whereby Sandy Wade, District Governor (DG) introduced incoming DG Rampur Viswenath (Tri-Cities). Michele Lee (Colville) is the DG Nominee while Bob Carroll (Deer Park) is incoming DG designate.
