BOARD OF DIRECTORS – JANUARY 3, 2012

The Board of Directors met at 6:30 A.M. on January 3rd and took the following actions....

  • Ratified the board action of last fall to place a full page ad in the local newspaper thanking the sponsors of SWISH, the Kootenai River Ride and the Community Breakfast & Auction.  Posters will also be prepared for distribution in the community.
  • Chairpersons were named for the Bonners Ferry Rotary fundraisers and service projects for 2012.  (NOTE “2012 FUND RAISERS & SERVICE PROJECTS” BELOW).
  • The club contributed $2,300 to Rotary International representing 23 members who are participating in ‘Every Rotarian Every Year’.
  • Requests were approved for the following three programs in the community: (1) $650.00 to Boundary Volunteer Ambulance to outfit a GPS navigation system in one of their vehicles; (2) a one time donation of $500.00 to the BoCo Backpack Food Program; and (3) $100.00 per month for 12 months of 2012 for purchase of meat for the food bank, It was further agreed that the food bank would provide a follow-up report of activity at the end of the 12-month period.
  • To recognize Rotary Awareness Month, the club will be presenting the “Community Above Service” award at least twice each year to individuals, groups or others in the community. (Note: Barb Mohler received the award last year as the official volunteer photographer for SWISH). 
  • Bonners Ferry Rotary will celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2012. Discussion centered on format, location and content including invitations to all former Rotary members, scholarship recipients, etc.  The club administration committee is heading this effort.

 

 2012 FUND RAISERS & SERVICE PROJECTS

 Coordinators were named and dates were selected for the several Bonners Ferry Rotary fundraisers and service projects for 2012: 

  • CALENDAR RAFFLE:  Therese Osborne – Ending January 31
  • YARD SALE:  Becky Calderone, Therese Osborne & Linda Alt – April 27-28
  • 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION:  Membership – May 24 (TENTATIVE)
  • SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT @ BOUNDARY COUNTY MUSEUM:  Ron Sukenik -- June 9
  • SWISH:  Linda McFadden, Brion Poston and Ron Smith – July 14-15
  • BOUNDARY COUNTY FAIR:  [Need Coordinator] – August 15-18
  • KOOTENAI RIVER RIDE:  Dave Walter & Marc Gray – September 15
  • COMMUNITY BREAKFAST & AUCTION:  Linda Alt & Norm Braatz – September 22
  • WACANID BIKE RIDE:  Mark McInnes – September 18-22
  • BIKE RACK @ VISITOR CENTER:  Walt Kirby -- Ongoing
  • WOOD DELIVERY:  David Sims & Ron Sukenik – Ongoing

 

Linda Alt was commended for her diligence and persistence in securing the coordinators in the early stages for these events. 

Linda also distributed information concerning the District’s ROTARY RUN/WALK 5080 for Polio that takes place January 1, 2012 through May 29, 2012.  The District is asking all 2,850 members in the 61 clubs in the District to take the pledge, “Curing Polio One Step at a Time”.  “Members would donate $1.00 for each mile that they run/walk between the start/finish times of this event," according to the District's flyer.  "A Rotarian may also solicit pledges from non-Rotarians for their miles run/walked.  50% of the money raised by each club will be used to fund their club charities and the remaining 50% will go to the Rotary End Polio Now Foundation to achieve a polio-free world.”  Kirsten suggested a Nature Walk at the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge.  Volunteers with ideas for a walk/run should speak with Linda.

OTHER ITEMS:

  • January is Rotary Awareness Month.  Promote Rotary when you are speaking to friends and co-workers in the community.  Here are some ways to promote Rotary – Rotary Awareness Month
  •  Mike Miller was recognized as the newest member of Rotary.  Mike’s classification is Insurance, being the owner of Kaiser Insurance Agency. 
  •   Wilma discussed the origin of the Rotary wheel.  You can read about the history of the Rotary wheel  HERE.
  • Ray Olson gave the Rotary Moment  for both January 3 & January 10.  He spoke about the Bill Gates/Warren Buffet challenge to billionaires and other wealthy individuals to donate a significant portion of their wealth to charity.  Both gentlemen have done that. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is now the largest in the world.  The Foundation together with Rotary have contributed over $500 million toward the eradication of polio.  On January 10th, Ray briefed the members on how their contribution of $12.50/quarter to the Rotary Foundation is spent.  In 2011, the Foundation underwrote 208 Global Grants worth $12 million in 46 countries in these areas of concentration – Peace & Conflict Resolution, Disease, Water Purification, Maternity Services, Basic Education, and Economic & Community Development.  Quite a story!
