LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER (AND OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS)

Ron Sukenik - Chairman (Pro-Tem), Kootenai River Bike Ride

Wilma DeVore - President, Bonners Ferry Rotary

All appears to be in order for the 9th Annual Kootenai River Ride (KRR) scheduled for September 10th beginning at the Fairgrounds.  Over 100 riders have registered, 40% of those from the website. Registration begins at 7 am, all others at 8 am. Ron indicated he would send an email to members regarding their assignments and a reminider for them to bring their cell phones as well as boxes, coolers, water jugs and the usual supplies. Set up on Friday is at 5 pm, with members needed for clean up beginning at 12 noon on Saturday. SEE YOU ALL ON THIS BEAUTIFUL SATURDAY!

Wilma reported on the September Board of Directors meeting: (1) one of three DUPLICATIVE BOARD POSITIONS was filled.  Kirsten is now club administration chair and a board member. The other two positions, Service Projects and Public Relations, are pending further discussion (NOTE: Since the board meeting, Jim agreed to serve as vice chair of public relations. Jim will also take a seat on the board); (2) Norm reported that all but one of the 2011 SCHOLARSHIPS have been paid; (3) Greg reported that Rotary will help fund a BOY SCOUT PROJECT for benches and tables on the trail site of the old North Hill. Rotary participation has been planned for several months; (4) the board agreed to accept the LDS CHURCH FIREWOOD proposal for this year only. Ron and Greg will oversee the project where some of the wood will be used at the silent auction on 9/17 with proceeds to those in the community in need of energy assistance; (5) the COMMUNITY BREAKFAST & SILENT AUCTION will be held at the middle school on Saturday, September17. A sign up sheet is being distributed; (6) a report on results of the FAIR BOOTH will be presented next month; (7) the current BYLAWS will be sent to the board members for review as appropriate.

The Duty Rosters (Speakers, Room Assignments) will be brought current and are available on the website in the center panel directly under the Rotary wheel. Make it one of your personal goals to always check there first to see if you have responsibilities for that week. (Go to www.bonnersferryrotary.com)

The January 2011 issue of The Rotarian  celebrated the magazine’s 100th anniversary. The editor of The Rotarian spent much of last summer culling through articles by notable authors and thinkers such as Isaac Asimov, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Clarence Darrow, Helen Keller, and many, many others, to choose selections to run in the 2011 commemorative issue.  Another example of these contributions is noted below.

"Nowadays we have reduced the world to a twentieth of the size it was 100 years age.  People can rush about frantically through the air.  They certainly do not see the beauties of the world, and it is surely their responsibility to show that they make it better.  It is a delusion to think that being able to move rapidly about from place to place makes people happier or wiser.

"As for the advantages of travel, they may be greatly exaggerated.  In order to know anything about a country you must walk through it.  You must sleep on its soil, pluck its foliage with your fingers.  You must light your fires by its fiords and strams, and watch the dawn break beyond strange mountains."
