Alexander Awbrey and Jordan Porter were named Bonners Ferry Rotary Students of the Month for May.

During his four years of high school. Alex, the son of Mark and Barb Awbrey, has been engaged in after-school activities pursuing football, basketball and baseball.  He was named a team captain in all three sports his senior year and “Upperclassman Athlete of the Year’ at the conclusion of his junior year. Other awards he has earned include being named All-League, 2nd Team All-State, and the team’s most inspirational player in football.  In baseball, Alex achieved awards as All-League and being named to a list of the top 20 high school players in Idaho pre-season by ESPN.  In addition to his sports accolades, Alex has also served as class president, participated in the Natural Helpers peer mediation and has served as an active member in the National Honor Society.

When describing his outside job activities during high school, Alex shared his experience working one summer at the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge learning about various species native to the refuge as well as the complex system of water pumping and draining needed to maintain wetlands throughout the hot summer months. This experience further encouraged his existing interest in biology, which he plans to pursue in college on the undergraduate level at the University of Idaho.  His career goal is to attend medical school to become a doctor.

When asked to cite his proudest achievement, Alex stated his ability to serve his church community as assisting minister.  He said he enjoys being able to give back to the individuals that have supported him.  “It makes me feel both humble and satisfied. Serving in this manner may not be an award, but I certainly consider it an achievement.  Being able to contribute to the strong faith community I grew up in is truly an honor and a blessing.”  He has helped serve food at the fair and aided in “fill the bus” as well as working with the Second Harvest food bank in Spokane.

Alex is the son of Mark and Barb Awbrey and the maternal grandson of the late Harold and Eula Sims.

The daughter of Jamie and Jennifer Porter, Jordan has been involved in basketball and softball for her four years of high school. She is especially proud of receiving the All-League award in basketball and has been a team captain. In softball, Jordan received an award for achieving the highest batting average in that sport.  She stated that she has had very little community service experience during high school and has chosen instead to give her time to sports, focusing on school, and spending time with her family.  During the summer months, she has worked in the summer youth program for the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho.

When asked to describe an achievement that she is especially proud, Jordan stated, “Throughout my high school experience, I was able to prove to my peers that it is OK to be yourself and not follow the crowd.  I stood for what I believed in and chose to walk my own healthy path.”  She plans to continue her education by attending Eastern Washington University and earning a degree in business administration.  Her aspirations are to use her education to work for and help the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho in whatever capacity she may be needed.

Congratulations to the two outstanding Rotary Students of the Month for May 2012.
