On December 7th, the Rotary Club of Bonners Ferry hosted a complimentary Christmas Reception for its members and their guests as a thank you for Rotary’s service to our community and throughout the world in 2013.  The Dodge Peak Lodge provided the space to Rotary free of charge.

President Lisa Holmes recognized Bonners Ferry Rotary officers and committee chairs and awarded gift certificates in appreciation for their work during the year.  Several door prizes were provided to many lucky winners of tickets held by the nearly 35 members and their guests who were in attendance.  Jerri Anderson, Assistant District Governor from Sandpoint, thanked the Bonners Ferry Rotary Club and all who made Rotary part of the lexicon in Bonners Ferry in 2013.

Lisa also introduced Brad Holifield as the newest Paul Harris Fellow and asked the 10 other PHFs who were present to stand.

Ron Sukenik, coordinator of the calendar project for 2014, with assist from others, especially Pat Carson, indicated that sales in December 2013 were at their highest level than at any time in the recent past.  Pat and Marciavee were recognized as the primary movers and shakers with table sales presence at Super 1, Safeway and Akin’s Monday through Saturday.  On these days, it was fun and rewarding, but also humbling to see the support that Rotary received from our local community.  Some people went out of their way to throw some money into the ticket jars, and didn’t buy a calendar….”Oh, it’s Rotary. Thank you for all you do.”  Mothers gave their children some cash and had them thank Rotary with their donations.

Last year, Pat had a thermometer showing progress toward our goal.  This year, he had ballons posted when all 10 calendars were sold.  Members are personally rewarded by knowing that the assigned calendars ($200.00) they were given have been sold.  The Calendar project nets approximately $9,000 each year, one of the most successful fundraisers for Rotary.

BONNERS FERRY ROTARY EVENTS:  Now on Bonners Ferry Rotary Website

During the year, Bonners Ferry Rotary provides financial grants to non-profit organizations throughout the community.  One stipulation is that the organization will attend a future meeting of Rotary to make a short presentation about their mission and how the grant money they have received will be used.  We support educational programs in our schools, contribute to community cancer services, community arts programs, the food bank, special needs youth projects, and many other worthwhile endeavors.  Each year, Rotary distributes college scholarships in excess of $10,000.00 and also supports both national and international programs such as worldwide polio eradication, clean water projects, children’s hospital funding and similar humanitarian projects.

We raise funds to support Rotary projects through fundraising events like the Kootenai River Bike Ride, the sale of Rotary Calendars, SWISH, the Community Breakfast & Silent Auction, the Border Patrol vs. Customs football game, as well as donations from Rotarians, community sponsors, and other benefactors that trust Rotary to make sound decisions.
