Dear fellow Rotarians,
It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news that our dear friend and fellow Rotarian, Sandra Lilo, passed away on Wednesday evening.
Sandra was much more than our District 6950 International Service Chair—she was the heart and soul of international service for so many of us. Through decades of unwavering dedication, compassion, and leadership, she touched the lives of thousands of people, both within Rotary and around the world. Her passion for Service Above Self was evident in everything she did, and her legacy will continue to inspire Rotarians for generations to come.
A member of the Seminole Lake Rotary Club since June 1991, Sandra devoted more than 35 years to Rotary service. She was recognized by her club as Rotarian of the Year in 1992, 1997, 2013, and 2017, a testament to the extraordinary impact she had on those around her. Throughout her Rotary journey, she sponsored numerous new members, strengthening not only her club but the future of Rotary itself.
Professionally, Sandra served as a dentist and generously shared her talents through countless international humanitarian missions. As a Rotocleft Team Leader, she helped bring life-changing cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries to children and families in need throughout the world. Her surgical missions restored smiles, confidence, and hope to so many who otherwise would have gone without care.
Sandra was also one of District 6950's greatest ambassadors for international service. She was always willing to visit Rotary clubs throughout our district to share stories of Rotary's global impact and inspire others to become involved in humanitarian projects. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and her presentations motivated countless Rotarians to look beyond their own communities and embrace Rotary's international mission.
I was especially grateful to have recently worked alongside Sandra on our district's efforts to support earthquake relief in Caracas, Venezuela. She was deeply committed to ensuring ShelterBox aid reached families who had lost so much. Even in the midst of planning future initiatives, Sandra was working tirelessly with District Governor-Elect Eric Johnson to organize additional international service projects that would continue changing lives throughout this Rotary year and beyond.
Sandra is survived by her brother, Steven Lilo, and her nephew, Jake Lilo.
While our district has lost an extraordinary leader, mentor, and friend, the impact of Sandra's life can never be measured simply by the years she served. It is reflected in every child whose life was transformed through surgery, every community strengthened through Rotary service, every Rotarian she inspired, and every friendship she so freely shared.
On behalf of Rotary District 6950, I extend our deepest condolences to Sandra's family, her friends, and her fellow members of the Seminole Lake Rotary Club. We grieve this tremendous loss together, while celebrating a life defined by compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
Sandra truly embodied Rotary's motto of Service Above Self. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she changed and in the work we continue because of her example.
Rest in peace, Sandra. Thank you for showing us what it truly means to serve.
Funeral and memorial service details will be shared with the district as soon as they become available.
With deepest sympathy,
Mark Middleton
